Threats to Biodiversity
The factors which effect the biodiversity is called as threats to
Biodiversity. Which affects the biodiversity in many ways. The major
threats to Biodiversity are:
• Habitat loss
• Poaching of wildlife
• Human-wildlife conflict
• Climate change
Habitat Loss
• Habitat loss includes habitat destruction, altering the physical
environment such that a species can no longer live there, and
habitat fragmentation, which involves dividing a habitat into
discontinuous patches.
• Basically the habitat loss occurs because of human being and
natural calamities like Tusnami, volcanic Eruptions etc.
• Because of this the animals lose their home and it leads to
extinction of some rare species.
Poaching of wildlife
• The illegal hunting and harvesting of animals is the second biggest
direct threat to species after habitat destruction. It can have a
devastating effect on the individual species and on entire ecosystems
as well as on local communities. Wild animals are being poached on a
massive scale, with millions of individual animals of thousands of
species worldwide killed or captured from their native habitats.
Poaching poses a growing threat to animals such as elephants and
rhinos, as well as to smaller creatures, including certain lizards and
monkeys.
Man-wildlife conflict
• Man-wildlife conflict refers to the interaction between wild
animals and people and the consequential negative impact on
both of them. Human population growth and the resultant
destruction of wildlife habitat for human habitation and
economic prosperity create reduction of resources or life to
some people and wild animals.
• Although man-wildlife conflict is as old as human civilization, in
modern times the degree of conflict has been on the rise due to
high rise in human population in the past several centuries.
Climate change
Consequences of climate change on the species component of
biodiversity include:
• changes in distribution,
• increased extinction rates,
• Changes in reproduction timings, and
• changes in length of growing seasons for plants.
Endangered and endemic species
• Endangered species are animals or plants which exist in very less
number and if not conserved properly, will extinct.
• Endemic species are plants or animals exist in some particular regions
and nowhere in the world. Unless conserved, these also will
disappear from earth.
• The species become endangered when there is a loss of
ecosystems, when they lose their and have no where to live they face
difficulty in living in another conditions. So they become endangered.

Conservation of Biodiversity
Insitu conservation: Conservation of genetic resources through
maintenance within the natural or man made ecosystem in which they
occur. This type includes a system of protected areas reas like national
parks, sanctuaries, nature reserves, landscapes, biosphere reserves
etc….
• Exsitu conservation: This is conservation outside their habitats by
perpetuating sample populations in genetic resource centers,
botanical gardens, culture collections etc….
