Past Simple Tense Guide

The past simple tense is used to describe completed actions in the past. It is formed using regular verbs with the "-ed" suffix, and irregular verbs take their unique past form. Negative sentences use "did not" and interrogative sentences place "did" before the subject. Spelling rules apply for verbs ending in consonants, vowels, "y", and doubling the final consonant before adding "-ed". The past simple can describe a single action, list a series of actions, describe duration or habit in the past, and refer to past facts or someone who has died. It is used with time adverbs like "yesterday" and "last year".

Past simple

Formation, usage, examples

Formation:

Affirmative is formed with verb + ‘ed’ suffix. But this is for regular verbs.
In case we have irregular verb we need to use its simple past form/ second form of the verb.
 I traveled to japan last year.
 I saw the movie premier last night
Negative sentences are formed with the auxiliary verb ‘did’ (‘do’ conjugated in the simple past)
and the particle ‘not’. We insert the particle between the auxiliary verb and the main verb,
which stands in the base form.
 My friend did not call me yesterday
 I didn’t wash my car
Interrogative is formed with auxiliary verb ‘did’ which stands before the subject, and is followed
by the verb in its base form.
