What Breaks the Fast: Qada and Kaffarah

The things that break a fast fall into two categories: 1) Things that require making up the fast (Qada) only, such as eating, drinking, vomiting intentionally, menstruation, and ejaculation. 2) Sexual intercourse is the only thing that requires making up the fast (Qada) and an expiation (Kaffarah), which includes freeing a slave, fasting for two months consecutively, or feeding 60 poor people. Things that do not break a fast include eating or drinking forgetfully, under threats or compulsion, or unintentional vomiting. One need only complete the fast in such cases without additional penalties.

THINGS WHICH

BREAK THE FAST

Prepared by: Abdullah S. Ditual
The things which break the fast are of two categories

َ َ‫)اءق‬
A) Qada(‫ض‬ B) Qada(‫)قـ َضى‬
َ and Kaffarah(‫)كـفـاـرة‬
• What breaks the fast and • What breaks it and requires
requires only making up for making up for it(Qada)
it(Qada) • And peforming an act of
expiation(Kaffarah)
A) What requires Qada(‫ض‬ َ only
َ %%‫)اءق‬
1. To eat and drink, knowingly and intentionally.
2. To induce vomiting intentionally,
3. Menstruation and post-partum bleeding.
4. Ejaculation, either by masturbation or any other method of
ejaculating short of intercourse,
5. Emitting blood due to Hijaamah (Cupping)
1. To eat and drink, knowingly and
• This isintentionally.
when food or drink is transported into the interior of the body, by mouth or by nose
• Allah says regarding fasting hours:

Eat and drink until the white streak becomes manifest to you from the dark streak at the
crack of dawn. Then complete the fast until nightfall.(Surah Baqarah 187)
• Whatever bears the same function as eating and or drinking
• It is not permissible for a fasting person to inhale the smoke of incense such that it will
enter into his interior, since smoke is a substance.
• Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬as saying:
If anyone forgets that he is fasting and eats or drinks he should complete his fast, for it is only
Allah Who has fed him and given him drink.(Muslim 1155)
2. To induce vomiting intentionally
• the Prophet(SWS) said

“Whoever induced vomiting must make up for the (fast).” (Al-Hakim

and others, and it is authentic)
3. Menstruation and post-partum bleeding
• Even if the bleeding starts just
before the sun sets, that day’s
fasting must be repeated.
[Link], either by masturbation or any
other method of ejaculating short of intercourse
• Whether the cause was kissing
the wife, or hugging her, or by
use of the hand, etc. This
nullifies the fast but requires
Qadha’ only.
5. Emitting blood due to Hijaamah (Cupping)
• According to analogy, all forms of emitting blood intentionally, which
affects the body like Hijaamah does, breaks one’s fasting
• As for the emission of a small amount of blood as part of a medical
examination, and so on, this does not break the fast since it does not
affect the body by weakening it, as is the case with Hijaamah
B) What requires Qadha and Kaffarah
both:
As for that which requires both Qadha(repeating) and Kaffarah(expiation), it is only
SEXUAL INTERCOURSE and nothing else, in the
opinion of a great number of scholars.
The expiation is:
1. To free a slave or,
2. To fast two lunar months in succession WITHOUT
MISSING A DAY or,
3. To feed sixty poor people.
Note: Some scholars say the obligation is in that order.
THINGS WHICH DO
NOT SPOIL THE FAST
THINGS WHICH DO NOT SPOIL
THE FAST
• To eat or drink forgetfully or mistakenly, or due
to another person’s threats and compulsion.
There is no necessity for Qadha or Kaffarah. The
Prophet SWS said:

“Whoever forgot while he was fasting and ate or • Unitentional Vomiting. The
drank he shoukd complete his fast, for it was Allah
Who fed him and gave him to drink”. (Agreed Prophet SWS said:
Upon)

and he SWS said: “Whoever is overcome by

vomiting(i.e. he does so
“Allah has removed from my Ummah (the burden unintentionally) while fasting,
of) mistakes and forgetfulness and what they are there is no Qadha on him.” (Al-
forced to do against their wills”. (At-Tabarani, and
it is authentic) Hakim, and it is authentic)
