LESSON 4: MAINTENANCE &

STORING OF HAND TOOLS


Maintenance of Hand Tools
 Preventive maintenance is the systematic care and
protection of tools, equipment, machines, and vehicles in
order to keep them in a safe, usable condition, that limits
downtime and extends productivity. We must always be
aware that maintenance tasks themselves are potentially
hazardous and can result in injury.
 Routine maintenance techniques like cleaning and
regular inspections are often done on a weekly, monthly,
and sometimes even daily basis. Cleaning, monitoring
and inspecting can be done quickly and often at no cost
while still contributing to an asset's overall health and
longevity.
HERE ARE THE SIMPLE
MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES FOR
HAND TOOLS:
Cleaning
Lubricating
Tightening
Tools Repairs
Adjusting using correct procedures
Sharpening
CLEANING
 The most simple and effective way to
clean hand tools is to wipe them with a
clean piece of cloth at the end of the
job. Don't be afraid to wash them. If the
hand tools are too dirty, wash them with
soapy water to wipe away the grime.
Remember to dry these tools to avoid
rusting and corrosion.
LUBRICATING
 Lubrication of tools is a necessary
process if you want to make your
tools serve you for a more extended
period because proper lubrication of
the tools keeps them working
without raising any issue regarding
the tool's performance.
TIGHTENING
 Tools with moving parts often suffer loosening of its parts. This is
normal since these segments keep on moving. A tool with loose
parts will not function properly and may cause injuries. Gripping
tools such as a plier is an example that needs tightening. A plier’s
rivet must be well tightened to be able to grip properly.
TOOLS REPAIRS
 In doing simple repair of tools, make sure that you are
knowledgeable in doing so. Repairing tools without
sufficient skills may result to further damage or inflict
injuries to the fixer. Small repairs like tightening,
sharpening and changing of handles may not require
special skills to do.

 Correct use of any tool including, hand tools is essential to
avoid accidents and maintain them in the workplace. For
this reason, it is quite important to understand the proper
use of hand tools and get more information about every
single of them before start using them.
SHARPENING
 It prolongs the life of your tools.
Blades turn slower when they're
duller, leading to a strained motor that
can overheat your tools. Without
regular tool sharpening, your tools
will be put under more strain that can
cause them to break much sooner than
they would have if you had kept them
sharp.
Storing of Hand Tools
 Storing of Hand Tools Storing your tools prevents them from
collecting dust, grease, and rust. If you take care of your tools,
they'll last longer and perform better. Taking care of your tools also
allows you to save money, as you'll avoid having to replace
damaged ones.
 It is important that the clean, sanitized equipment and surfaces
drain dry and are stored dry so as to prevent bacteria growth.
Necessary equipment (brushes, etc.) must also be clean and stored
in a clean, sanitary manner.

these tools help in the completion of the different job
requirements, keeping them well preserved will make
