Population's Effect on Environment & Economy

The document discusses the relationship between population growth and its impact on the environment and economy. It notes that the global population is expected to reach 9.2 billion by 2050 with India surpassing China as the most populated nation. Rapid population growth can hamper economic development by increasing unemployment, straining food and housing resources, and raising the cost of living. The document also outlines some of the key effects of overpopulation on the environment like increased resource consumption, deforestation, and climate change. Solutions proposed to address overpopulation include family planning programs, women's empowerment, reducing poverty, and developing sustainable practices.

Population & Environment
 It is estimated that population will reach 9.2 billion
and India will surpass China.
 The relation between population and environment is
more complex, it is more than just numbers.
 The impact of humans on environment takes two
major forms:
1. Consumption of resources
2. Wastage as a result of consumption of resources
 Demographers, geographers, anthropologists,
economists, and environmental scientists have sought
to answer a more complex set of questions
 Debate on ‘carrying capacity’ of the planet.
Population & Economy
 Population is very closely linked to the economic
development of a society. The quantity, quality,
structure, distribution, and movement of a population
can help or hinder the rate of economic development.
 A developed country with low population can reduce
economic development in future. On the other hand,
for an underdeveloped country with high population
any increase in population will be detrimental to its
economy.
Over-population and its effect on the
environment

Causes of overpopulation Effects of overpopulation

 Increase in life expectancy  Farming impacts
 Decrease in infant mortality rate  Deforestation
 Prevailing uneducation  Eutrophication
 Poverty  Loss of fresh water
 Global warming and climate change
 Extinction of species
 Increased habitat loss
 Depletion of natural resources
 Increased emergence of new epidemics &
 pandemics
 Elevation in the crime rate
Solution of over population
 Overpopulation is the problem that did not arise
overnight and its solution cannot come up in a single
day. Controlling overpopulation is a long term process
and requires a lot of planning. The government of one’s
country has a huge role in checking overpopulation.
 It’s a responsibility of the government to generate
awareness amongst the people and work towards:
• Family planning.
• Women empowerment.
• Some kind of incentive to people.
• Educate people about birth control methods.
• Reduction in poverty.
Rapid population growth hampers economic
development
Unemployment
 Rapid growth in population leads to increase in labor force
 Imbalance between supply and demand of labor
 Example- Uganda
 Rising youth unemployment
 Major cause of growth in population Lack of family planning

Food problem
 Global population expected to reach 9.8 billion people by 2050
 Demand for food will increase
Housing problem
 Example- Favelas in Rio de Janeiro
 More than 1.5 million people live in Favelas
 Lack access to education, healthcare etc.
 High incidence of malnutrition, Dengue, Cholera and
other diseases
Poverty
 Example- Nigeria
 Population will be doubled by 2050
 Third most populous country by 2050
 Currently 83 million Nigerians live in poverty

High cost of living

 Rise in the prices of essential commodities
INDIA’S POPULATION
India’s population currently is estimated at 1.3 billion.
Nearly 17.7% of the world’s population lives in India. As we
are catching up with China whose population is 1.4 billion and
has 18.47% of the global population by 2027.

India is expected to surpass China as the world’s most populous

nation by 2024.

The current population growth rate is 1%, which means India

means India will add over 13 million people this year. As in
much of the rest of the world, India’s growth rate has been
slowing for the past few decades, a decline attributed to
increasing alleviation of poverty, rising education levels,
especially among women and growing urbanization.
