DIRECT and
REPORTED SPEECH
Direct Speech
• a sentence that gives a statement
or thought in its original form
according to how the original
speaker said
• they are enclosed with quotation
marks (“”)
Example:

Shiela asked, “ Where are you going.”

Renz replied, “ I’m going home.”


Reported Speech
• puts the speaker’s words or ideas
into a sentence without quotation
marks.

• when something someone has said


is summed up without writing the
speech out fully
Example:

Shiela asked Renz where he was going.

Renz said he was going home.


Changing Direct Speech to Reported Speech
a. Quotation mark and comma are no
longer used in the reported speech.
