INTRODUCTION
• A retractable roof stadium provides flexibility for
events in varying weather conditions, allowing
games and concerts to proceed without
disruption. It also enhances spectator comfort
and can reduce maintenance costs by protecting
the interior from the elements.
LOCATION
SUGATHADASA
STADIUM
In Sri Lanka most important
sports events take place in the
Sugathadasa ground.
However, the weather
conditions can sometimes
disrupt these events. To
prevent such difficulties, we
propose a retractable roof for
sugathadasa stadium.
RETRACTABLE ROOF SYSTEM:
(KEY FEATURES)
• MECHANISM TYPE: Sliding panel (steel frame structure) & hydraulic
jack system and sliding track mechanism with motor automatic
system.
• OPENING SPEED AND SIZE: Considerations for fast opening and
closing times, with a roof span that can cover the entire field.
• WEATHER RESISTANCE: Waterproof and UV-resistant materials to
protect the field and spectators in various weather conditions.
• ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Using solar panels to reduce ensure Energy –
efficiency.
MATERIALS NEEDED
• Choose material based on strength and
durability such as
1. Foundation - Reinforced concrete
2. Structure - Stainless Steel
3. Roof - Aluminum
FEATURES
• Seating capacity - 25000
• Area - 200m length
120m width
40m stadium height + 18 m roof
height
• Time to close -3 minutes to close fully

MECHANISM
The roof operates through a
system of motors, cables, and
tracks that allow it to open and
close.
The roof slides on the specific
tracks.
After closing the panels slide
away into a designated area and
sealing the structure.
When opening the panels those
are drawn back into place.
The roof includes sensors for
detecting weather and automatic
open and close.
ENGINEERING
ASPECTS
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
• Ensure structural integrity under dead and dynamics load.
FOUNDATION DESIGN
• Decide after testing soil condition and settlement.
SAFETY
• Ensure safe access for maintenance and fall protection
system.
WATERPROOF AND DRAINAGE
• Prevent water infiltration and effective drainage system
STRUCTURAL ASPECTS
• Roof Structures are designed to withstand Wind loads .

STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
• The retractable roof structure will rely on a strong steel frame that
provides stability and durability, essential for supporting the sliding
panels.
• This frame will work with a hydraulic jack system that enables the roof
to move smoothly along sliding tracks, making opening and closing
efficient.
• We’ll be using adequately strengthened columns to ensure the
structure can handle the weight and movement of the roof, even
during adverse weather.
• By using these structural elements, the roof will be both functional
and durable, maintaining a reliable shelter for the stadium over time.
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY AND
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
The new stadium utilizes solar power
as its primary energy source, with An integrated rainwater
solar panels installed to promote management system is designed
sustainability and minimize the to recycle rainwater collected
stadium's environmental footprint. from the roof.
BENEFITS
• Giving an aesthetic view to
spectators.
• Conducting events without any of
climate issues.
• Protecting the audience and
games from weather changes
such as rain.
