OBJECTIVE OF BIO
MEDICAL SIGNAL :
Biomedical Signal Processing and Control aims to
provide a cross-disciplinary international forum for the
interchange of information on research in
the measurement and analysis of signals and image
s in clinical medicine and the biological sciences.
Emphasis is placed on contributions dealing with the
practical, applications-led research on the use of
methods and devices in clinical diagnosis, patient
monitoring and management.
Biomedical Signal Processing and Control reflects the
main areas in which these methods are being used and
developed at the interface of both engineering and
clinical science.
HOW IS SIGNAL PROCESSING
USED IN BIOMEDICAL
APPLICATIONS?
Signal and image processing techniques now allow us to
predict unobserved biological processes from non-
invasive measurements (for example in the control of blood
flow), identify specific impairments (for example in executing
movements of the limb), reliably screen large populations for
common medical conditions.
Biomedical signal processing involves the analysis of these
measurements to provide useful information upon which
clinicians can make decisions. ... Engineers are discovering
new ways to process these signals using a variety of
mathematical formulae and algorithms.
WHAT ARE THE SOURCES OF
BIOMEDICAL SIGNALS?
Biomedical signals are electrical signals collected from the body.
Some of the most common ones are the electrocardiogram (ECG)
and the electroencephalogram (EEG). These signals are of great
value because they can be used for diagnostic purposes. Signal
processing techniques can be used to improve transmission,
storage efficiency and subjective quality and to also emphasize or
detect components of interest in a measured signal. Biomedical
signals are observations of physiological activities of organisms,
ranging from gene and protein sequences, to neural and cardiac
rhythms, to tissue and organ images. Biomedical signal processing
aims at extracting significant information from biomedical signals.
HOW MANY TYPES OF
BIOMEDICAL SIGNALS ARE
THERE?
The most important biomedical signals are classified into two
types such as action potential and event-related potential.
Electromyogram (EMG), electroneurogram (ENG),
electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) are
existing action potential.
The biomedical signals are measured using invasive and
noninvasive sensors. Both types of sensors, invasive and
noninvasive are wearable devices for health monitoring

ADVANCES IN BIOMEDICAL SIGNAL AND
IMAGE PROCESSING – A SYSTEMATIC
REVIEW
Biological and medical information processing is a dynamic field of
natural science [1]. The biomedical signals have been used by the
architects for designing the bioelectrical and biomechanical
systems. The physicians and human service experts introduced
the diagnosing procedures of medical issues. The biomedical
signals handled by these experts have been broadly focussed on
both diagnosis as well as interpretation of information on the
health status of an individual. The existing signal processing tools
or programs are more suitable for engineers working in biomedical
applications, according to their position they can utilize the tools
or programs easily [2]. The most important biomedical signals are
classified into two types such as action potential and event-
related potential. Electromyogram (EMG), electroneurogram
(ENG), electrocardiogram (ECG) electroneurogram (ENG),
electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) are
existing action potential
BIOMEDICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING
NON-INVASIVE SENSORS FOR
HEALTHCARE
The biomedical industry has grown in recent years
because of advanced technology. Advanced sensing
technologies and internet-of-things (IoT) devices offer real-
time monitoring. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have
introduced new approaches to predictive and remote
healthcare. Biomedical signals acquired through non-
invasive sensors often have a low signal to noise ratio.
They are processed using advanced signal processing
methods. The classification and analysis of the signals are
used in prognosis and diagnosis. They are also used in
brain-computer interfaces and neural prostheses. Smart
sensors and advanced signal processing techniques play a
significant role in the healthcare sector by employing
automated and computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems.
NEED OF BIO MEDICAL
EXPERIMENTS
Important need in a number of biomedical experiments is
classification. In clinics, the goal of classification is to distinguish
pathology from normal. For instance, monitoring physiological
recordings, clinicians judge if patients suffer from illness [16];
watching cardiac MRI scans, cardiologists identify which region
the myocardium experiences failure [17]; analyzing gene
sequences of a family, geneticists infer the likelihood that the
children inherit disease from their parents [18]. These examples
illustrate that automatic decision making can be an important
step in medical practice. In particular, incorrect disease
identification will not only waste diagnosis resources but also
delay treatment or cause loss of patients’ lives. Another
compelling impact of classification in biosignal processing is
illustrated by laboratories where researchers utilize classification
methods to identify the category of unknown biomolecules.

Computational processing and analysis of
biomedical signals applied on the time series follow
a chain of finite number of processes. Typical
schemes front process is the acquisition of signal
via the sensory subsystem. Next steps in the
ANALYSIS acquisition processing and analysis chain include
buffers and preamplifiers, the filtering stage, the
OF analog-digital conversion part, the removal of
possible artifacts, the event detection and the
BIOMEDIC analysis and feature extraction. Biomedical signal
measurement, parameter identification and
AL
characterization initiate by the acquisition of
diagnostic data in the form of image or time series
that carry valuable information related to
SIGNALS underlying physical processes. The analog signal
usually requires to be amplified and bandpass or
lowpass filtered. Since most signal processing is
easier to implement using digital methods, the
analog signal is converted to digital format using
an analog-to-digital converter. Once converted, the
signal is often stored, or buffered, in memory.
