CHEMOTHERAPY

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a drug therapy which is used to


decrease the size of tumor and relief from
symptoms of tumor.
Or
Chemotherapy is a drug treatment that uses
powerful chemicals to kill fast growing cells in
your body.
Chemotherapy is most often used to treat cancer,
since cancer cells grow and multiply much more
quickly than most cells in the body.
It involves the use of cytotoxic medication to cure
cancers, such as leukaemia, lymphoma & Some
solid tumors , or to decrease the tumor size.
Action:-
Chemotherapy disrupts the cell cycle in various
phases by interrupting cell metabolism & replication.

It also works by interfering with the ability of the


malignant cell to synthesize the vital enzymes &
chemicals.

Phase specific drugs work during only some phases


of the cell cycle non-cell specific drugs work through
entire cell cycle.
Purpose of Chemotherapy
 Decrease size of tumor and stop the
symptoms
 Maintain a patient mental health
 Provide a comfort to the patient
Types of Chemotherapy
1. Neo- adjuvant
2. Adjuvant
3. Single Dose Chemotherapy
4. Combination Chemotherapy
1.Neo - Adjuvant
This therapy is given before surgery to shrink tumor or decreases the size of
tumor.

2.Adjuvant
This Therapy is given after surgery to lower the risk that the cancer will
come back & prevent development of cancer cells.

3. Single Dose Chemotherapy


In this therapy only single dose of drug are used.

4.Combination Chemotherapy
In this therapy combination of therapy are used such as enzyme therapy or
radiation therapy.
Side Effects of Chemotherapy
 Hair loss
 Fatigue
 Abnormal bleeding
 Nausea & Vomiting
 Dry of skin
