Binary and Decimal

Binary numbers are a base-2 system using only the digits 0 and 1, essential for computers and digital electronics. Each binary digit, or bit, represents a power of 2, similar to how decimal numbers operate on powers of 10. The document also contrasts binary with the decimal system and provides examples of converting between the two.

BINARY SYSTEM

What are Binary Numbers?

Binary numbers are a base-2

number system that uses
only two digits: 0 and 1. It
is the language of computers
and digital electronics.
How Binary Works:

Each digit in a binary number is called a bit

(short for "binary digit").
Binary operates on base-2, meaning each
place represents a power of 2 (just like the
decimal system operates on base-10,
where each place represents a power of
10).

The decimal system is the
standard number system used
in daily life. It is a base-10
system, meaning it uses ten
digits (0-9) to represent
numbers.
Place Value in the Decimal System
Each digit in a decimal number has a place value based on powers of 10:
