ABROAD
Rizal’s education in manila (1872- 1882)

Ateneo de Municipal

Jose was sent to Manila to study in Ateneo de Municipal, a school run by a


spanish Jesuit , 4 months after the martyrdom of GOM-BUR-ZA, while his
mother was still in prison.

Ateneo de Municipal was renamed as “ ATENEO DE MANILA”

Ateneo was the counterpart of College de San Juan De Letran

Don Francisco changed his mind and decid to send Jose to Ateneo de
Municipal
 College registrar of Ateneo de Municipal refused to admit
Jose because of two reasons:
 He was already late for registration
 He was frail and sickly

 Through the intervention of Manuel Xerex Burgos, the


nephew of Father Burgos, Jose was admitted at Ateneo.

 Jose used the surname “RIZAL” for the first time because
the family name Mercado had raised suspicious among
authorities.
JESUIT EDUCATION SYSTEM

 The system of education given by the Jesuits in the Ateneo was


advanced from that of other colleges during that period.

 It trained the character of the student by rigid discipline and


religious instruction.

 It promoted physical culture, fine arts and scientific studies.

The classes was divided into two groups
1. Roman Empire - the boarder inside the
Ateneo
2. Carthaginian Empire- the non-boarder of
Ateneo

Emperor- The best student

Tribune- The second best student

Decurion- The third best student

Centurion- The fourth best student

Standard Bearer- The fifth best student

Only those who distinguished themselves in the class for their
piety and diligence could join this fraternity of Mary and Saint
Louis Gonzaga.

This fraternity met on sundays and held public programs after


mass, such as poetry recitations or debates.

Jose took private Spanish lessons during recess at Santa Isabel


College to improve his knowledge and fluency.

Fr. Jose Bech - Jose first teacher
 Jose learned to systematize his work from the beginning
and he devised a plan for what needed to do during the
twenty-four hours of the day.
 After a month Jose attained the “rank of Emperor.”
 At the end of the semester, Jose received excellent grades
in all subjects and examinations.
MARCH 1873

During summer vacation, Jose went alone to visit Dona


Teodora in prison and inform her of the good news.
Second Year in Ateneo

Jose had the same professor as in the previous year.

He lived in No. 6 Calle Magallanes

At the end of the school year , Jose received excellent


grades in all subject and a gold medal.

Studies in third year , as he began to win prizes in the


quartely examinations.

 Jose began to win prizes in the quarterly examinations.

He desired to be physician in order to cure his


mother’s failing eyesight.

from their parents and friends, leonor signed

VICTIM OF BRUTALITY BY A
SPANISH OFFICER
Rizal first encountered spanish brutality was on 1880 during
his summer vacation in Calamba.
General Primo de Rivera- Spanish Governor-General of the
Philippines

He complain “ I went to the Captain-General but I could


not obtain any justice; my wound lasted two weeks.” he
wrote to Blumentritt on March 21, 1887

 Rizal entered on literary contest sponsored by Artistico-


Literario
 He submitted his poem “A La Juventud Filipina” ( To
the Filipino Youth)
Rizal won first place
Two reason that poem is
considered as Classic:

It was the first great poem written in Spanish by a


Filipino

It articulated for the first time the nationalistic notion


that filipino, not foreigners, were the true hope of the
Fatherland.
Artistic Literary Lyceum held another Literary Contest

Rizal submitted an “El Consejo de Los Dioses” (The


Council of the Gods)

Rizal won the FIRST prize, a gold ring.

This contest was attended by;

RIZAL PUBLISHED

 Abd-el-azis Y Mahuma in 1879. Junto at pasig (Beside


the Pasig)
Rizal wrote a Filipinas, a sonnet for the album of the
society of Sculpture in 1880.

 In 1881, he wrote AI M.R.P Pablo Ramon, a poem in


tribute to the Ateneo’s rector, Father Ramon.
 1880 - Rizal established companerismo (Comradeship) a
secret society of filipino student at UST

 Rizal dicided to continue

Reasons:
The dominican professor were hostile
to him.
The Spaniards discriminated the filipino
students based on their race.
The teaching method was antiquated
and oppressive.’
He did not receive high scholastic
honors as a result of his professor’s
attitudes.
They supported Rizal to
continue his study in abroad.
