Solving Linear Equations Grade 8 Solving Linear Equations Grade 8

This document provides a comprehensive guide for Grade 8 students on solving linear equations in one variable, covering concepts such as equations with one solution, no solutions, and infinite solutions. It includes examples of two-step equations, equations with brackets, and equations with unknowns on both sides, along with practice problems and their solutions. The learning outcomes emphasize the ability to solve multi-step linear equations with rational coefficients and to manipulate expressions effectively.

Learning Outcomes

• Solve multi-step linear equations in one

variable with rational coefficients

• Solve linear equations whose solutions require

expanding expressions and collecting like terms
Linear Equations
Linear equations in one variable are in the form:

Ax + b = 0
A = coefficient, x = variable, b = constant term

In order to solve equations in one variable, you need to isolate the variable on
one side with constants on the other side. Mathematical operations must be
performed to both sides of the equal sign in order to isolate the variable and
keep the equation balanced.
Linear Equations
One solution

This equation has one solution.

3x - 1 = 14
+1 +1

3x = 15
÷3 ÷3

x=5 One Solution

Linear Equations
No Solutions

Below is an example of a linear equation that has no solution. There are no values
of x that would satisfy the equation and their graphs would be parallel.

5x - 8 = 5x + 2
- 5x - 5x

-8=2 No Solution
Linear Equations
Infinite Solutions

Below is an example of a linear equation that has infinite solutions. Their graphs
would have the same slope and intercept, therefore they would have infinite
solutions.

3x - 1 = -1 + 3x
-3x -3x

-1 = -1 Infinite Solution
Two Step Equations
Examples
Solve the following two step equations:

a) 3x + 4 = - b) 6 - 5x = -
17 -4
-4 -6 19 -6
3x = - 21 -5x = - 25
÷3 ÷3 ÷ -5 ÷ -5
x=-7 x=5
Equations with Brackets
Examples
Solve the following equations with brackets:

a) 4(x - 3) = -6 b) 2(x - 3) + 3(x + 1) = -

4x - 12 = -6 132x - 6 + 3x + 3 = -
+12 +12 135x - 3 = -13
4x = 6 +3 +3

÷4 ÷4
5x = -10
÷5 ÷5
x = 1.5
x = -2
Equations with Unknowns on Both Sides
Examples
Solve the following equations with unknowns on both sides:

a) 3x - 5 = 2x + 4 b) 12 - 8x = 4x - 6
-2x -2x +8x +8x

x-5=4 12 = 12x - 6
+5 +5 +6 +6

x=9 18 = 12x
÷ ÷
12 12
x = 1.5
Question Time
Solve the following linear equations:

a) 3x - 2 = -11 e) 3x - 14 = 6 - 7x

b) 2x + 5 = 4x f) 6x - 5 = 2x - 3

c) 6(x - 2) = -9 g) 5x - 6 = 2(2x - 1)

d) 3(4x + 1) + 2(3x - 4) = h) 5 + 2(x - 1) = 3x -1

Solutions
a) 3x - 2 = -11 x = -3 e) 3x - 14 = 6 - 7x x=2

b) 2x + 5 = 4x x= f) 6x - 5 = 2x - 3 x=
2.5 0.5

c) 6(x - 2) = -9 x= g) 5x - 6 = 2(2x - 1) x=4
