Introduction/Meaning
Transportation in marketing in marketing
simply means the physical carriage or
movement of finished products from the
place of manufacturing to the place where
it would be accessible and available to the
target audience either wholesalers, sales
agent, retailers and ultimately the final
consumers.
Types of Transportation
There are four forms of transportation namely; Land,
Water, Air and Pipeline.
1. Land transport: is classified into two namely road
transport and rail transport
a. Road transport: is the movement of people and goods
from one place to another with the aids of the
following, bicycle, motorcycle, motor car, buses, trailer
etc
b. Rail Transport: Is the movement of people with their
goods by trains which move on railway .
2. Water Transportation:
Is the least expensive and slowest mode of freight
transport. It is generally used to transport heavy
produce over long distances when speed is not an
issue
Transport of water is of two major categories namely:
 Inland water transportation

 International water transportation

Inland water Transportation, involves
movement of passengers and goods within
Nigeria through water with the aids of
canoes engine boats, ferry boats etc
 International water: Is the bedrock of
international trade. Goods and people can
be moved from one country to another with
the aids of Cargo liners, passenger liner,
steamers, Tramp lines etc.
Air transport:
Transport by air means, using the aero plane for
transportation of people and cargo. Air
transportation offers the advantage of speed and can
be used for long distance transport. However, air is
also the most expensive means of transportation. In
Nigeria there are international airports and Domestic
airports.
Pipeline Transport:
Is the form of transport where liquid
products are transported through
pipeline laid underground over a long
distance. The liquid is pumped from
one end to another. For example,
pipeline transport is utilized to
transport crude oil from oil fields to
refineries. It is also used to transport
refined product to different depots.
Factors affecting the choice of
transportation
They are as follows
 Nature of the goods

 Speed

 Cost

 Availability
