What is a VHB?
VHB Tape is a double coated
pressure sensitive adhesive acrylic foam tape
 Solid ACRYLIC adhesive
 Completely CLOSED CELL

VHB Tape Typical Foam Tape

3i
How Strong is VHB Tape?

 Peel Adhesion
- typically 20-30 psi

 Dynamic Shear
- typically 90-110 psi

 Dynamic (Normal) Tensile

- typically 120-160 psi

REMEMBER - IT’S A CONTINUOUS BOND

3i
What Makes VHB Special ?

VISCOELASTICITY

Viscous
- Tacky, can flow into the surface

Elastic
- “Memory”, shock resistance

Energy Absorption & Stress Relaxation

- Absorb & dessipitate energy by the core

- Reduce long term stress

VHB – Effect of Temperature
 Effect of temperature
 softer, more compliant at hi-temps
 firmer, more rigid at low temps

 Normal outdoor range OK

 - 400C to 1000C
 watch shock, hi-impact at low temps

 Generally successful in paint ovens

 up to 1500C for most tapes
 Special grades for temp upto 2100C & 2600C

VHB - Moisture Resistance:

 Aluminum substrate

 10 Years duration

 Immersed in 5% salt water

Result :

60% adhesion retention with no oxidation beneath bond

3i
VHB - Solvent Resistance
 Solvents swell adhesive, NOT dissolve
 Solvent submersion - not recommended
 Solvent splash/incidental contact OK

3i
VHB - Fatigue Testing
 Tested for durability against repetitive strains
 full reversal load, constant stress, to failure
 >20 psi would pass 1 million cycles
 superior resistance to fatigue demonstrated

VHB – Thumb Rules for Application
Use the right amount of Tape

For static forces (dead load) use 9 sq.in (60 sq.cm) per kg
load

Max design load 138kpa (20 psi) for repetitive or cyclic

loading

Over wide range of temps and speeds strength >138kpa

Use data
Experience - what
page values has worked
as maximum engineering numbers

VHB – How to Make it Work ?
Basic Tools
– Scotch Brite
Steps involved
– Plastic squeegee (PA-1
# Surface preparation Wiper)
– Firm rubber roller (J-Roller)
# Priming (if needed)
– Scissors or utility knife
# Apply VHB – IPA-Water mix
– Clean cloth/towels
# Apply Pressure
– Silane Primer
– Pressure: nip rollers
– Pressure: plier-clamp
– Masking Tape
3i
VHB – How to Make it Work ?
Surface Preparation :

• Basic: use 50:50 IPA and Water

• Cleans light oils, fingerprints, light
contamination
• safe, common solution
• Stronger: solvent wipe then IPA
• removes heavier oil or grease
• heptane, Citrus-based, etc followed by IPA-W
• solvents may leave residue behind
• Abrasion: use fine Scotch-Brite
• removes oxidation or heavy dirt
• fine abrasive is optimal
• follow by thorough cleaning

VHB – How to Make it Work ?
Most Commonly used Primers
# Silane Primer : For glass & other siliceous substrates
# Primer 94 : For plastics, wood & painted metal surfaces

Refer 3M Tech Bulletin on Tape Primers for specific applications

 Apply the tape without air entrapment

 On long length, cut the liner every meter and fold back

 Rub down with a roller to ensure good contact & to

enhance the flow
