About us

The Atmospheric Monitoring & Research Group, led by Prof Alfred Micallef, is part of the Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Science at UM. Its main scientific installations are located at Giordan Lighthouse, limits of Għasri, and Xewkija (UM's Gozo Campus), both on the island of Gozo, in the Central Mediterranean.  

Currently, the atmospheric monitoring station at Giordan Lighthouse is equipped with analysers for greenhouse gases, reactive gases and Radon-222. The repertoire of instrumentation at the station also includes an advanced aerosol monitoring system. 

Scientific equipment, including a present weather sensor, three solar radiation pyranometers and a sun photometer, as well as some meteorological instruments, are installed at the Xewkija facility, which also houses the the scientific officers in-charge, namely, Mr Martin Saliba, Mrs Rebecca Caruana and Mr Marvic Grima.

The Atmospheric Monitoring & Research Group is also involved in indoor air quality monitoring and research, especially at cultural and heritage sites.
