I was 19 in 1976. My Sunday evening ritual involved my weekly bath and listening to the radio drama on BBC R4.
Les Misèrables completely transfixed me ... from start to finish over that long hot summer - what an epic drama, what narration, what a sweep of history even down to the Parisian sewers.
I had long despaired of ever listening to this classic again, but once more I have been transported back to early 19th century France, and 1976. Merici infinniment.

I had long since despaired of hearing this wonderful dramatisation again. I heard it back in the long hot drought summer of 1976 when it was part of that
...
golden age of BBC Radio 4 drama the classic serial, going out first at 9 pm on a Sunday night and repeated at 3 pm the following Tuesday. I enjoyed it so much and was on school summer holidays so I could catch the Tuesday afternoon repeat as well. I had quite forgotten that Robert Hardy was the narrator and how wonderfully subtle and understated his performance is as well. Many, many thanks to the person who uploaded this lost gem - I am beyond delighted to hear it again all these years later.
