about

These two pieces appeared as bonus tracks on the CD reissue of the initially vinyl only release Sisters Oregon. These are the notes from that CD edition:

Sisters Oregon was assembled sporadically over a period of almost 3 years. The starting point was a recording of a boys choir made at Air Studio, London in September 2014 during the sessions for my album Hand. Cannot. Erase.

A few months later I was invited by Frans De Waard to take part in an artist in residence program at Extrapool in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. The idea was to work with another musician over a few days with a view to performing a live concert at the end of the process. My collaborator was German experimental artist Thomas Koner, and I suggested to him we use the boys choir recordings as a starting point, to which he agreed. To this end I assembled a 40 minute long backing track for us to work with, by layering and processing the voice recordings.

As we would be performing the music in a concert setting, I decided on a setup of four cassette Walkmans and several effects pedals (echo, reverb, distortion) distributed across a table and routed through a mixing desk. In that way the audience would see me “play” these things, as I swapped cassettes with different sound sources (low piano notes, rain, amplified tape hiss, short wave radio transmissions..etc), and processed them in real time with the pedals. At least it would be a little more visual than just sitting behind a laptop. Arriving in Nijmegen 24 hours before Thomas, I spent the first day improvising with the setup on my own. The following day he joined me in developing our duo version of the material and at the end of the week we performed it in concert to an audience of 300 people at the Doornroosje theatre in Nijmegen.

During the 2 years following the Extrapool event I occasionally returned to the same material, gradually working it into a more structured piece. Finally, in response to an invitation from Stefan Knappe of Drone Records to release something on 10 inch vinyl as part of his Substantia Innominata series, I created and mixed the definitive 26 minute version in June 2017. I called it Sisters Oregon. This version has 4 distinct parts, but for the CD edition I have also included 2 of the earlier and much looser work in progress versions from Nijmegen. These were recorded direct to stereo and are presented exactly as I improvised them.

Bass Communion London, UK

Bass Communion is my ambient / noise / experimental project, which has been active since the mid 90's. Very rarely are synthesisers used, most of the source material comes from recordings of things such as percussion, piano, guitar, choir, and a lot of old 78 records - Steven Wilson ... more
