Pushing the frontiers of innovative research
About us
The League of European Research Universities (LERU) is a network of 24 leading research-intensive universities based in 12 countries around Europe. LERU universities share the values of high-quality teaching within an environment of internationally competitive research and are committed to the advancement of knowledge and the promotion of research across a broad front. LERU is a prominent advocate for the promotion of basic research at European research universities. We strongly believe that basic research plays an essential role in the innovation process and significantly contributes to the progress of society. We aim at furthering politicians’, policy makers’ and opinion leaders’ understanding of the important role and activities of research-intensive universities. We do this through direct communication and discussions within the policy community, sound proposals for improvement and progress, and carefully considered publications on fundamental issues affecting Europe’s research universities. Furthermore, our 24 members bring together representatives to work on LERU policy development and collaborative issues in a number of areas such as academic careers, doctoral training, gender issues, research management, assessment and funding, open scholarship, social sciences and humanities, enterprise and innovation, e-learning and many more. The LERU members are: University of Amsterdam / Universitat de Barcelona / University of Cambridge / University of Copenhagen / Trinity College Dublin / University of Edinburgh / University of Freiburg / Université de Genève / Universität Heidelberg / University of Helsinki / Leiden University / KU Leuven / Imperial College London / University College London / Lund University / University of Milan / Ludwig Maximilians Universität München / University of Oxford / Sorbonne University / Université Paris-Saclay / University of Strasbourg / Utrecht University / ETH Zurich / University of Zurich

LERU welcomes the report of the Expert Group on the interim evaluation of #HorizonEurope and to guide the evolution of the European R&I #FrameworkProgramme. We are glad that the report: 🔸 strikes a good balance between an ‘evolution’ from Horizon Europe to a future FP, and a ‘revolution’. 🔸 gives explicit support for the European Research Council (ERC), the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions (#MSCA) and the European Innovation Council (#EIC) 🔸 calls for a vast increase and ringfencing of the #FP10 budget However, LERU is concerned about: 🔸 the lack of details of certain new proposals 🔸 the disconnection with recent policy developments at the level of the European Commission Read LERU's full analysis 👇

How can we address differences persisting in #researchsecurity maturity & prioritisation, across EU universities and member states? During a joint workshop, LERU and Central European Universities (CE7) discussed these issues and defined three areas that must be addressed within EU policy on the subject: 🔸 There needs to be more consistency in research security approaches across Europe. 🔸 There needs to be greater engagement with the research security agenda. 🔸 The proposed European Centre of Expertise on Research Security should be developed in partnership with universities. Published/leaked EU documents have created many questions over the past few weeks. What will happen to the next Framework Programme (#FP10), the European Research Council (ERC), the European Competitiveness Fund (#ECF)…? It has created unrest in Europe’s academic community. LERU therefore calls upon European R&I Commissioner Iliana Ivanova and DG R&I Director-General Marc Lemaître to quickly provide clarity on the ongoing discussions. It would be desirable that EC DG R&I DG Marc Lemaitre shares his views on this September 2024 DG BUDG proposal for the next MFF, and its potential consequences for R&I. Perhaps next week at the occasion of the presentation of the HLG Report ? League of European Research Universities (LERU)

It looks like Europe’s R&I community can forget about a €200 B ringfenced budget for FP10, and perhaps even about an FP10 ? At least if this DG Budget proposal would survive and get approved by the EU27. Challenging times ahead, I fear … League of European Research Universities (LERU)
