In celebration of its 10th anniversary, renowned Iceland-based Australian composer Ben Frost releases a limited edition red vinyl of his studio album, A U R O R A, on Mute.

Limited to just 400 copies in North America, this vinyl edition includes alternative artwork and an exclusive download of his blistering 2014 live performance at Berlin’s Berghain.

A U R O R A, which has lost none of its visceral potency in the intervening years, received universal acclaim and featured in Albums of the Year lists at NPR, Rolling Stone, Clash, Crack, FACT, Stereogum, and more.

Performed by Frost along with Greg Fox (ex-Liturgy), Shahzad Ismaily, and Thor Harris (ex-Swans) and largely written in Eastern DR Congo, the album is wholly absent of guitar, piano, string instruments and natural wooden intimacy, offering a defiantly synthetic world
of fiercely shaped sounds and galactic interference, pummelling skins and pure metals.

Frost is known for his groundbreaking contributions to composition, production, sound art, and direction over the past 15 years. These include soundtracks for film and TV shows such as Fortitude, Raised by Wolves, and Netflix series Dark and 1899, as well as opera creations including The Wasp Factory and The Murder of Halit Yozgat (which was performed at London’s Royal Opera House and Hannover’s Staatsoper). In 2024, he released his first studio album in six years, titled Scope Neglect, an experimental, genre-shifting record forged from Frost’s admiration for metal with the mindful removal of its conventional attributes.

about

A U R O R A is Ben Frost’s highly anticipated fifth solo release, his first since the widely acclaimed 2009 album BY THE THROAT.

A U R O R A aims directly, through its monolithic construction, at blinding luminescent alchemy; not with benign heavenly beauty but through decimating magnetic force.

This is no pristine vision of digital music, it is a filthy, uncivilized offering of interrupted future time where emergency flares illuminate ruined nightclubs and the faith of the dancefloor rests in a diesel-powered generator spewing forth its own extinction, eating rancid fuel so loudly it threatens to overrun the very music it is powering.

about

Ben Frost

The music of Ben Frost is about contrast; influenced as much by Classical Minimalism as by Punk Rock and Metal, Frost's throbbing guitar-based textures emerge from nothing and slowly coalesce into huge, forbidding forms that often eschew conventional structures in favor of the inevitable unfoldings of vast mechanical systems. ... more
