Yesterday, I ran the Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon 🏃‍♂️ Here are some commonalities between running and sales ⬇️ 1. It's a (half) marathon, not a sprint. 2. Discipline is key. 3. Your training program will set you up for success. 4. Sometimes you will not want to wake up early and go for a run or hit the phones on a cold call block. Both are important and necessary for success. 5. Time management is critical. 6. The hardest part is starting your journey. 7. Hard work WILL pay off.

I’ve made lots of sales hires for early stage companies and I learned the mistakes to avoid during interviews. It comes down to the way you ask the questions. Instead of asking if they are organized,  Ask how they set up their day. Instead of asking if they can operate in a fast paced environment, Ask them to describe a process they created and implemented. Instead of asking about their average deal size, sales cycle and who they sold into,  Ask them to share details about the hardest deal they ever won. Instead of asking if they are hardworking and up for the challenge, Tell them about your current challenges and see how they react and what they suggest. My advice for anyone looking to hire salespeople - If you ask a lot of yes or no questions you will get a lot of yes’s and no’s and won’t learn much. Keep in mind, sales people are good at selling themselves. They have rehearsed answers to the most common questions. The way to really find out if they are capable is to ask them to walk you through their approach. Lean in to their answers. Follow up with more questions. While they are talking, think about how their experience translates to what you need.

Lauren Feyer and I ran a campaign in Canada last quarter, and yesterday the first outbound deal from that campaign became a customer. Here is what Lauren did to source this deal that was 100% cold outbound. 1. Linkedin outreach, she got connected with someone at the account on Linkedin and had a conversation with them understanding their current tech stack but also the challenges we are helping companies in their industry solve. We spent a lot of time evaluating closed won and lost analysis in this industry, important integrations, and needs of their business to make sure our messaging was relevant but also we were reaching out to the correct titles. 2. Got an intro, she followed up with that same person from Linkedin on email who immediately introduced her to the team leading an evaluation. 3. TIMING..the timing was perfect as were starting a technology eval so they had urgency to get a conversation started. 4. Prep..Lauren took the time to gather some info and ask some questions from the eval team prior to the first call so that her AE/SE could use the full time to tailor the conversation to what the prospect actually cared about. You DO NOT need to hire SDR’s with SDR experience! ❌ Yes, it feels safer to hire someone who has done the job before. I get it. Sure candidates with previous SDR experience can be great… But when you actually consider what makes a good SDR, it’s actually almost always due to their soft skills, not their pre ious experience as an SDR… Why? 1. More experience -= more expensive 💰 2. Great SDR’s are promoted quickly 📈 3. Top performing SDRs have diverse backgrounds ⚽️ 4. It's Thankful Thursday - and I'm so thankful that I’ve had a lot of coffee chats recently with my fellow Canadian sales pros! There was a common theme keeps coming up: “I want to start posting on LinkedIn but there are already so many LinkedIn influencers out there, posting sales tips on a daily basis.” ☕🤔 I hear you. It can feel like LinkedIn is already packed with people talking about prospecting, lead generation, and the latest sales hacks. But let’s take a step back for a moment. 🚶‍♂️ Have you noticed that many of these influencers work for CRM companies, B2B databases, or similar businesses that sell sales tools? Of course, their content is going to revolve around prospecting, lead generation, and closing deals. It’s in their best interest to promote the products and methods that support their business. 💼 But guess what? This is YOUR reminder: LinkedIn isn’t just for them. It’s for YOU, too! 👈 We don’t have to be a “guru” selling a new software to share valuable insights. We all have stories from the field, lessons from tough calls, and tips that we can help others. We’ve all got a perspective that is grounded in real, day-to-day sales work. The world doesn’t need another copy-paste influencer post. If I was a SaaS BDR debating between multiple job opportunities, here is the criteria I would use to make a decision... TIP 1: 📚 A learning environment that works for YOU: whether it's a structured onboarding program, shadowing a buddy, or even learning through trial and error. TIP 2: 🎯 Qualify current targets (and commission) attainment of the team: don’t be swayed by a flashy €70k OTE that could really mean €50k if the team's average attainment is only 40%. TIP 3: 🫵 Figure out what matters to YOU, here are some priorities I often hear: - Opportunities to grow into an AE role within 12–18 months. - Selling a product + working with a buyer persona you resonate with. - Developing transferable skills to other roles and industries. - A team culture that aligns with you, both at work and outside (especially important if you're new to the city). -------- If you are a SaaS BDR (or aspire to be one), let me know in the comments or via message: what kind of content would be most helpful to you?

Happy 4th American friends 🇺🇸... for my fellow Canadians in SDR land here's some things I often find are a good use of time on a day like today: - Draft personalized emails - Find and/or research accounts and prospects - Sequence prospects - Self enablement/study - Admin work/reporting - Cold call/disco call role plays - Cold call/disco call game tape - Tweak chatGPT prompting for pmails/account research/etc - Prospect into your Canadian/EMEA/global accounts Also use the time to breath.
