Spanish musician Caliza composed a soundtrack for "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1920) which was premiered in 2023 as a live musical performance accompanying a screening of the film in mk2 Paz cinema in Madrid.

"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” was premiered over 100 years ago and still remains one of the most iconic and influential films in history. It is primarily remembered for its expressionist set designs and its prophetic criticism of authority in the Interwar period.

Being a film that predates the introduction of sound in cinema, it presents an opportunity for reinterpretation through its music. With this in mind, Caliza proposes a completely new perspective on the film through an original electronic soundtrack. This is Caliza's debut scoring a film, a challenge that, despite the experimental and contemporary result, has been approached in a traditional manner, striving to be very faithful to the plot and matching the tone of each scene.

The music is based on synthesizer sounds, samples, distorted voices, and field recordings that blur the boundaries between music and sound effects.

After the good impressions left by its premiere, Caliza is releasing a physical edition of the project: A 12” LP with the music accompanied by a visual and photographic booklet.

Caliza has cut the 77 minutes that make up the soundtrack to under 45 minutes, the length of a 12” LP.

Caliza's music is accompanied by a photography book by artist Raquel Bravo, with images from her own archive and from the film. It will be edited in a special hardcover format of 300 copies that will contain both the album and the book.

The title “Despierta unos instantes de tu oscura noche” (Awaken for a moment from your dark night) is taken from the intertitles of the film. It is the order dictated by Dr. Caligari to Cesare, the sleepwalker, when he first introduces him to the audience at the fair. Both the music and the selection of photographs reflect on the concept of sleep and wakefulness.

The album will also be distributed digitally, accompanied by a bonus single track inspired by the film score, which is not included in the LP.
