Period
[edit]As Wiki Loves Public Art photo contest in 2014 is planned on 1-31 May it would be very beneficial if the two contests are not during the same period, as this would prevent countries to participate in both of our contests. The question is if WLE could be set during let me say April or June? --Perohanych (talk) 16:19, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- I would suggest June. I believe that in Sweden and other Nordic countries this is when people are more likely to go on a hike and take photos of natural heritage. Simply because nature is much more striking at this time of year and people are on holiday. April is just not a very beautiful month in our part of the world (no leaves on the trees and a lot of rain)... :-) Best, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 17:11, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- Perhaps July would also be an option? Then it would be one months between them: WLPA (May), WLE (July) and WLM (September). John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 17:16, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think, June is much better, than in April or July, of course if May does not suitable. --Jbuket (talk) 08:47, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
- The same thought. But, I am from latin america, but in june and july are the best month to my country. I think we can change the date. But we don't participate (yet) in WLPA (we like to), so that it's the final date (april-may)?200.8.28.210 04:11, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

- For Wiki Loves Earth April-May is a good period. In southern europe countries, in June green grass starts to turn into yellow, and in July starts to get burned :-) Unfortunately it seems that we can't have an ideal period. Also: late May and early June is the time students are preparing for and having exams. June to late September everybody is heading for the beaches. 15 April — 15 May has the advantage of including May Day, a traditional spring holiday where many people go out at the nature. -Geraki TLG 13:56, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
- Would it not be like WLM, in which the photos can be taken any time, rather than just during the contest period (except by procrastinators like me), and the kick-off and deadline dates relate only to uploading the files?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:56, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, contest period would work in a similar way. However, in order to fit the needs of procrastinators like you, it would be more convenient to organise a contest when the weather is nice. May Day seems to play the same role for visiting natural sites (at least in Europe) as European Heritage Days for visiting monuments, hence the timing — NickK (talk) 16:55, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

I would move it at least into May. In this case May Day could be the kick off day, starts the contest, and end of May (last week of the contest is the most effective anyway) could be more comfortable for countries norther than the Mediterranean region. (And more round date, easier to remember, communicate :) ) Samat (talk) 21:13, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, unfortunately WMUY received notification on March 28, so it is impossible to us to participate this year, 'cause lack of time. But we'll keep in mind for next one. Cheers. --Ganímedes (talk) 12:09, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
Period for national phase
[edit]Hi, would that be a problem if we set the Brazilian National phase to start on May, the 5th? We're doing all we can to have all set by tomorrow morning, but some definitions and a good review of our pages would require a few more days. Rodrigo Padula has been working on that and is rushing to have all set in a few hours, but I would very much appreciate if we could set in more details the prizes, jury and other important things that are still not totally defined down here. --Oona (talk) 04:46, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
- i believe that's okay. we have been improving our lists and looking for partners during the WLM contest in September, so it is okay either your start on the 1st and continue working on the project during the contest running, or if you start on the 5th... and continue working on the project during the contest running :) that's up to you, as there will always be smth left undone --アンタナナ 09:24, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply and I'm sorry for delaying on mine. We ended up starting on the 1st and have fully determined details early this week. It's all running well since then. Thanks again! --Oona (talk) 19:13, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Coordination of the participant survey
[edit]Dear everybody,
The Wiki Loves Public Art team would like to send out a participant survey again this year. We were wondering if you are planning to do the same for WLE? If so, I would like to suggest that we work together on creating the survey (so that results can be compared) and on the bot delivery of the survey. I strongly believe that it would make a lot of sense to pool our resources! :-)
Our hope is that the program evaluation team at WMF will be able to help with the analysis if we gather the data for them, but this is yet to be finally confirmed. On our end it is currently myself and user:Beat Estermann involved.
We created a survey already last year that we hope that we can use again. A draft timetable and link to last year's survey is available here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Public_Art_2014/Participants%27_Survey
I hope that you are interested!

- Hi John,
- I think this is an interesting idea, we will discuss this survey and likely join WLPA survey — NickK (talk) 22:50, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
- Great! Let me know what you decide and what your team is willing to help with/skilled at. Best, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 10:55, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hi NickK, as you might already know the WLPA international team sadly decided that we had to postpone the WLPA contest this year. Sadly there were a number of issues that made it to risky/hard to make it happen. We wish you all good luck and hope to return again next year! John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 15:26, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I know. We would be glad to see Sweden join WLE if you are interested in it - I know Sweden has beautiful nature and you already have a team available in April-May :) And of course we will be happy to organise this survey together :) — NickK (talk) 21:01, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Logo and Date
[edit]Hi! Some days ago we had a meeting of people, who are interested to start WLE in Austria. We now plan to carry out the contest in Austria in May, as vegetation will not be so abundant in a lot of places in Austria. Additionally we are not very happy with the current logo, so we asked User:AleXXw, who designed the new WikiVoyage Logo to create a new one for WLE too. As I think, we now have some options: Decide to take the designe proposal from Alex, run a logo contest in very short time or take the old logo (which we in Austria won't take). What do you think? --Geiserich77 (talk) 22:25, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
- For me, new proposed one looks better. —레비Revi 16:31, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
- Having it more Wikimedia-like? --Ilario (talk) 16:43, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
- There were 2 logos that we used before the current one. Also we had a small vote User:BaseSat/WLE logo vote. File:Dub.png was the first but it's only png. File:Graphic1554.svg was in CentralNotice banner. I think that we may hold such a vote once again. --BaseSat (talk) 16:52, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

- I like new logo. Think it has be an international. --Jbuket (talk) 12:57, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
- For Andorra and probably Spain, we also prefer the new one. Some decision should be taken to adopt an unique international logo. --V.Riullop (talk) 10:04, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Oppose as for me it is quite primitive. The first one was much better and more creative in its conception. It`s fascination was in combination of the tree (as a symbol of nature) and a puzzle (as a symbol of knoledge and Wikipedia at least). The last one is just a tree. It lost its fashination and creativity. --A1 (talk) 22:59, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
Discussion points
[edit]We (WMUA) are starting work on the organisation of the international part of Wiki Loves Earth, and we would like to reach a consensus on several points with local teams interested in organising WLE in their countries. Thank you in advance for your answers! — NickK (talk) 18:19, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Dates
[edit]What dates would be most suitable for your countries? Our current suggestions are:
- either 15 April — 15 May (to include both Easter and May holidays for those countries who have them, and to define international winners by late June so that we can award a traditional Wikimanis scolarship to the winner)
- or 1 May — 31 May (more time to prepare the contest, but results will be announced in the middle of summer holidays)
Please tell us which dates would work better for you, and if you have alternative suggestions and/or issues linked to timing in your country — NickK (talk) 18:19, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
- In the Netherlands we prefer to have the local contest from 1 May - 30 June. More time to prepare, more time to organise events during the contest (at least 3-4, in weekends), better weather conditions. Summer Holidays in Holland are during july - august. For the international part 1 May - 31 May would work best. --DDJJ (talk) 08:48, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- 1 May — 31 May for Austria --Geiserich77 (talk) 16:55, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

- 1 May — 31 May for Andorra and probably Spain. Per w:KISS principle it is easier to explain a whole month contest, but I don't care any date if it is adopted by most countries and decided very soon. We can not kick off promotion without a date established for international contest. --V.Riullop (talk) 10:16, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
- hi all. it seems that 1 May — 31 May is the best choice here --アンタナナ 22:00, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Scope
[edit]We would like to clearly define the scope of the contest. This contest of taking pictures of natural heritage, so we suggest the following criteria:
- Views of all natural heritage sites that appear on your national natural heritage lists (Natura 2000 sites, natural reserves, national parks, natural monuments, conservation areas of both national and local significance etc.)
- Where available, representative biotopes of natural heritage sites (species most specific to the natural site — e.g. flamingos for Los Flamencos National Reserve)
- Photos focused on common spieces (e.g. a flower in the forest, a squirrel on the tree) are not the part of the contest
Please tell us if you have any comments orsuggestions — NickK (talk) 18:19, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
- We for Austria inlcuded most of the "Nature categories" but excluded for example "Natura 2000" sites or "protected landscape", as they incorporate to much area. --Geiserich77 (talk) 11:44, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- We do not discard in the futur to include w:fr:Corine Biotipes, focused on registered habitats and species. --V.Riullop (talk) 10:25, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
- In the Netherlands all photos of all national parks (only) are accepted, without exeptions for specific spieces. Romaine (talk) 10:15, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
- We do not discard in the futur to include w:fr:Corine Biotipes, focused on registered habitats and species. --V.Riullop (talk) 10:25, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
Prizes
[edit]We are going to provide prizes to top-15 photos, as it was the case of Wiki Loves Monuments. The total prize budget will be around 5000 US$ (similar to last year's WLM). There will also be some souvenirs, and there might be also some prizes for sponsors and special (e.g. regional) nominations
WLM prizes last year were one Wikimania scolarship (we want to have one this year as well, BUT we have to come with the final result by late June to make it possible) and 14 photography-related vouchers (should be something available in most, if not all, participating countries). Please tell us whether you are fine with keeping similar prizes or if you have some other ideas — NickK (talk) 18:19, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
"Spring"
[edit]Dear folks, the FAQ has an inappropriate answer to the first question:
- Why the period «15 April — 15 May» was chosen?
- This is, so to say, green period here, many people are excited to take photos of nature views in spring.
Some countries don't have four seasons, and it's autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Please change that section. Thanks, NaBUru38 (talk) 15:00, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Please notice that at the moment all coutries listed under "participant countries" are in climates with an spring in April and May.--Pere prlpz (talk) 16:41, 5 March 2014 (UTC)- Sorry, your are right. I should have read the list more carefully. A more suitable wording for Brazil and Australia would be a nice improvement.--Pere prlpz (talk) 16:46, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Integration of WLE-Photos in Commons
[edit]Is it possible, to tell the photographers to add the Category:Photographs taken on 2014-05-01 to their uploaded photos? (in minimum!) Or a subcategory, similar to the today existing Category:Photographs taken on 2014-04-13? (special pages and categories for WLE 2014: Category:Wiki Loves Earth 2014 – Photographs taken on 2014-05-01, Category:Wiki Loves Earth 2014 – Photographs taken on 2014-05-02, Category:Wiki Loves Earth 2014 – Photographs taken on 2014-05-03 and so on ... in the main-Category:Wiki Loves Earth 2014 – Photographs). With that filled categories at the end of the global day (UTC) the photo-boxes, with the new uploaded WLE-photos, could be linked to the main-page and presented the global-Community. Connects the environmental-nature-protection-Wikipedia-Commons-Community! What do you think about? --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 23:06, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
- Do you mean "taken on" or "uploaded on"? Photos can be taken any day before uploading. However, the spirit of the competition is to put it easy for participants not to ask them for more data than regular uploads. Statistics for daily uploads could be done with some tool, if these is someone willing to do it, for example [3] and [4]. --V.Riullop (talk) 09:14, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
- We can get 'taken on' date from EXIF-metadata.--Anatoliy (talk) 11:11, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Dear Friends,
could anyone please inform us about:
- who will be in the international jury for the contest 2014?
- the possibility of using the jury tools for Wiki Loves Earth 2014 in our country (The Netherlands)?
Greetings, Dick Bos (talk) 14:51, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

date of international contest
[edit]Dear Friends,
As you perhaps know, in The Netherlands the contest will be held from May 1st until June 30th. The first meeting will take place in National Park Weerribben - Wieden. A wetland of international importance in the north west corner of province Overijssel. See announcement (in Dutch) here.
The international contest is held in the period of 1 May - 31 May.
This does mean that the Dutch participants, who deliver pictures after May 31st, cannot be judged in the international contest.
Now let me ask you this question: would it perhaps be possible to wait with judging for the international contest until the end of June, so that the Dutch contributors, who send in pictures in June, can still be judged in the international competition?
I'm most eager to hear your answer.

WLE International Jury
[edit]the idea was for every local team to choose one international jury member. (s)he is not supposed to be a team member or not a local jury team member. We have asked Lodewijk about some WLM tips, and he told us, that the jury members "should be from different countries, but not necessarily all from participating countries". how about this:
- every country has a right to chose one international jury member
- it does not mean that (s)he is supposed to actually be from that country
- if a team fails to find one - that's ok
there should be different people there - wikimedians (of course!), photographers and experts on nature. well? --アンタナナ 19:18, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- I miss why you would want every country to appoint someone. I would rather suggest that people nominate one or two people, and that the international team picks five to seven people from that pool. Otherwise you run the risk of getting a huge jury with mostly Wikimedians from the organizing committees. Effeietsanders (talk) 20:44, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- thanks, a sound idea --アンタナナ 17:29, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Are there statistics pages for the current edition? The local statistics page in cawiki is ca:Viquiprojecte:Patrimoni natural/2014/Estadístiques but I can't find any other statistics page (global or local).--Pere prlpz (talk) 10:35, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
- A quick look at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014 will give you rough figures. --Ordercrazy (talk) 10:52, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
- we are doing it like this: WLE-2014 (there are number of files per country) --アンタナナ 11:05, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
- Nice one. I have translated it at User:Vriullop/WLE 2014. --V.Riullop (talk) 08:46, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

- Number of images is quite meaningless - although very used in press releases. Number of sites and users would be more interesting. And statistics by user - instead of just by country - would be interesting, too.--Pere prlpz (talk) 22:56, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
- it takes too much space Category:Wiki Loves Earth 2014 in Ukraine statistics, but it can be developed, i believe. but it also takes time ;) there was a tool of some kind used during WLM 2013 at least --アンタナナ 23:04, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

Centralnotice for german users, who can help?
[edit]I am looking for someone who can tell me how to change the thing which every German user sees here at Commons at the top of pages. (I think it depends on a user's location/browser what he sees.) I mean the WLE notice with the green border which says "Wiki Loves Earth in focus during May and June. Discover nature, take photos, help Wikipedia and win!" or in German "Wiki Loves Earth: Natur für die Wikipedia fotografieren und gewinnen!" This notice you see also on Wikipedias and it always links to http://www.wikilovesearth.de/?pk_campaign=Centralnotice. The external private wikilovesearth.de blog has the same content like de:Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Earth 2014/Deutschland, the text is only in an other form on more than one page. It is ok maybe for Wikipedias and newbies to link this blog, but I think if a user is already on Commons this link makes no sense and is counterproductive. Instead here Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2014 in Germany should be linked. Can someone help? Please notice that the German contest is not ended yet, we still have four weeks left. Holger1959 (talk) 04:02, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
- The German team should decide where it should link to, I can't decide that for you. Romaine (talk) 01:23, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Error with UploadWizard Ghana
[edit]When i (from Germany with German language browser) click Special:UploadWizard&campaign=wle-gh then I see the intro for the German WLE contest, not one for Ghana.
For other countries i see correct country-specific intros, like for NL or BR. Holger1959 (talk) 01:34, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
- Only some countries use specific templates, most countries use all the same template. Romaine (talk) 01:24, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Leaflet for Wiki Loves Earth 2014 at Wikimania 2014
[edit]Hi all,
My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:
• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost
For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:
Project leaflets
The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014.

- thank you very much! almost done --アンタナナ 18:09, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
Hi guys, my name is Paul Rubenstein and I'm helping out with editing the text that will go on your leaflet - I saw that there hasn't yet been any entered, so please fill it in ASAP as our designer is about to start making the leaflets :)
- oops, i am sorry. now done ;) --アンタナナ 10:09, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Wonderful! - Paul
A user to check
[edit]Hello, IMHO there's a user that uploads pictures found on the web for this competition. Look here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AListFiles&user=Lahcenemeribai&ilshowall=1 --Berthold Werner (talk) 11:33, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
- thank you! it does seem to be a case of copyright violation :(
