I created an app using Streamlit to help children learn to read with their sight words. It just covers nouns for now because they are easier to visualize. I was primarily motivated to help my youngest son with his reading. I had a lot of fun on the project and received positive feedback from some parents, teachers, and others I shared it with so far. It includes an image(generated with help from various GenAI tools) for three choices for each word and audio for reading the choice out loud using gTTS (Google text to speech). If you struggle with networking - just meet people that work on the same thing as you, but at different companies. Grab virtual coffee to compare notes casually. You can find them on social media, communities dedicated to your field, tech conferences, and other places. Just compare notes + help/be helped + make a friend. Do this a lot. You'll help your current employer with added perspective on a problem space. You'll help yourself by making a new friend! We need to stop defining "colleague" as "works at the same company" but rather someone we just collaborate with professionally in any capacity

If a Design Pattern gives you a general solution to a recurring problem in a particular context, then what does an anti-pattern give you? 'An Anti-Pattern tells you how to go from a problem to a BAD solution.' You're probably asking yourself, "Why on earth would anyone waste their time documenting bad solutions?" Think about it like this: if there is a recurring bad solution to a common problem, then by documenting it we can prevent other developers from making the same mistake. After all, avoiding bad solutions can be just as valuable as finding good ones! Let's look at the elements of an anti-pattern: An anti-pattern tells you why a bad solution is attractive. Let's face it, no one would choose a bad solution if there wasn't something about it that seemed attractive up front. One of the biggest jobs of the anti-pattern is to alert you to the seductive aspect of the solution. An anti-pattern tells you why that solution in the long term is bad. In order to understand why it's an anti-pattern, you've got to understand how it's going to have a negative effect down the road. The anti-pattern describes where you'll get into trouble using the solution. An anti-pattern suggests other patterns that are applicable which may provide good solutions. To be truly helpful, an anti-pattern needs to point you in the right direction; it should other possibilities that suggest good solutions. I can't believe I finally get Meta Llama-3 8B model deployed on my AWS Sagemaker and already doing a couple of inferencing. I have battled with this for almost 24 hours now after gotten an access grant to Llama-3 8B on Huggingface. I can't believe tweaking the model token prefill length will do the trick and using the Huggingace text generation inference(TGI) deep learning container instead of the traditional huggingface pytorch inferencing DLC is the tweak. It doesn’t matter the GPU instance type you throw at SageMaker If you don’t tweak the model token prefill, CUDA will still be coming back with not enough memory. Recently, my manager asked me to highlight my top three achievements at work over the past two quarters. At first, I hesitated, but then I realized I had made some significant strides. It made me think that we should reflect on our accomplishments more often to remind ourselves that our efforts are truly paying off. So, here are my recent achievements: 1. Highest-ever client satisfaction score for an external technical service - 9.3/10. This was for a code review service, which was largely successful due to significant process automation, including the use of the https://lnkd.in/dieQSK6N, and focusing more on the key pain points raised by the clients. 2. Integrated a new Spryker package https://lnkd.in/dPkGQW56 during a fixathon, and within just a month, it has already reached over 2,000 downloads. It is the IncrementalInstaller module that executes installation scripts once per environment and stores plugin information in the database. It works similarly to a database migration system but is also suitable for data manipulation tasks. 3. Completed the first code patch via Spryker's contribution platform https://lnkd.in/dwUebmMW. Being the first is always challenging, but I’m particularly proud of paving the way by creating guidelines for my colleagues who are interested in contributing to Spryker’s product themselves. I wonder if these can be called achievements.

Feedback: Not just a cool effect for punk music in the 80's! I rely heavily on #feedback in so many things in my life: Is my heart rate right? Is my #code passing the tests? Is my bicep getting bigger?(yes, obviously) Even as I type this the browser gives me feedback that obviously was spelled wrong... But what happens when feedback isn't obvious. The other morning while running my watch wasn't tracking my heart rate properly. This was fine for me because I could feel by my breath and pace that I was still meeting my goals. Sometimes though, thinking someone is aware of their performance isn't enough. As a high school administrator I remember once walking into a classroom and seeing the front tow rows engaged in what the teacher was doing and the back three were on their phones, chatting, sleeping, doodling, basically all the things I used to do when I was in high school (my phone had a really long cord.) In my mind I thought it was obvious that the #teacher wasn't meeting the standard of getting everyone engaged and that the teacher would know that the conversations and laughter from the back of the class was distracting to those that wanted to understand the lesson. To my surprise when I asked him how he thought the observation went he was pleased that he got 20% of the students engaged and thought it went well. When I reminded him that this was well below the standard he was upset and a little angry. And to be fair it is difficult in the modern day to keep kids engaged. Also though, once he was made completely aware that he wasn't meeting the standard he sought out help on things he could do to increase engagement and work on some classroom management strategies as well. I could have just left the room, assumed that he knew his performance wasn't good, I mean, it was written down that 80% of the class would be engaged 80% of the time... But, sometimes overt tough conversations have to happen to get folks to realize that they need to improve to meet standards. In my favorite podcast, "Coaching for Leaders" with Dave Stachowiak it was mentioned that criticism is investment. If my manager gives me a critique, even if or maybe especially if it's not positive I feel like he is investing in my future. He is tough on me because he wants me to be the best me that I can. He could sit back and assume I know if I'm not meeting the standard, and he would continue to get the same performance from me. But he knows I want to do a good job so he is overt when I could do better. He does deliver the message with kindness and encouragement of course which made it much more palatable, but the message still came accross. Bottom line, if you want improvement in #performance don't assume anything, provide the tough feedback and form a pathway towards #growth! Window Seat + Coding + Krispy Kreme = Good Flight 🍩💻✈️ (even got a potential client) Life as a CS major is already a mess, broken code, debugging, and now apparently, networking at 30,000 feet lol. I was sulking over my stupid buggy code with a Krispy Kreme donut in my hand, questioning my entire existence 🥲. Unexpectedly the person next to me, well he saw “dedication” instead of “depression” and striked up a convo. If you have a tool that your users use urgently, please do not clutter the interface with pop-ups about new features, exciting deals, etc. For me, it both irritates me (I'm trying to get something done) and means I instantly ignore them, forgetting all about whatever you want me to know. Instead have a mild notification highlight on some stable UI element that takes me to news. Share your product updates there and we'll both be happier.

They're short, easy, low risk, low stress, and a great way to get your feet wet as a speaker, sharing something you care about, even if it's more tenuously related to the conference theme than "full" talks ;-)
