REVIEWS

4 stars: All Music Guide

A spectacular and tumultuous session between pianist Keith Tippett, saxophonist Larry Stabbins and drummer Louis Moholo. As if in an updated version of the kind of emotional impact the Coltrane band could achieve, they sway easily between trance-like states and frenetic activity. Tippett’s piano playing is, as usual, majestic.
- The Guardian

Tern is a live recording gathering pianist Keith Tippett, saxophonist Larry Stabbins (late of the jazz-influenced Young Marble Giants' spinoff Weekend), and South African percussionist Louis Moholo, who doubles on cello at times. The album title refers both to a set of three, and to a small, pretty shore bird native to the U.K., and unlike many free improvisational performances, much of Tern actually falls under the general descriptor "small and pretty." All three players draw from a conventional jazz background as well as their more experimental excursions. The closing "The Greatest Service" is downright placid, a low-key end to an often-enchanting performance.
- All Music Guide:

There is high-density free improvisation here, in perfect interactions, as well as impressive individual performances. Louis Moholo, in top form, structures the process in a varied way, so everything is under control, but never intrusive. Larry Stabbins takes advantage of the opportunity to play widely, right down to the noise melody. Keith Tippett always surprises with new effects on and in the grand piano that continue to enhance the music.
