THE FIRST CRACK IN THE SHEER FACE OF GOD is the latest album by the ambient/drone project Ember Wreath. It is a series of ruminations on borrowed time, survivor's guilt, the collective death drive, the multifaceted threat of oblivion. These pieces are built on a framework of evolving loops and noise overlaid with improvisational melodic and atonal sounds. At times, they resemble an attempt to claw through the floorboards. At other times, they are deceptively serene, lending the listener a fleeting moment of clarity.
