Summary of my contacts with Durova

I believe this should be explained somewhere. Since posting comments at Durova's talk page is considered a violation of all wiki laws, I will do it here. Hope nobody minds. Let's set some things straight then.

  1. On October 31 I reported M.K on WP:PAIN for what I consider a serious offence.
  2. Durova asked me to provide links and diffs, which I did
  3. Durova explained that the scope of WP:PAIN is only clear insults and threats, while he/she did not interpret M.K's actions as such, which is why I asked for clarification.
  4. In response Durova posted a comment which was not a response to my question, but from which it was clear that he/she misunderstood my words.
  5. I then posted a clarification and asked Durova, whom I considered to be an expert on the subject of WP:NPA of her interpretation. However, my comment was removed shortly afterwards, which is why I posted a short notification at Durova's talk page
  6. Initially there was no response to my questions (which were valid), so I took the liberty to specifically ask for a response. After all where could I ask for WP:PAIN's interpretation if not at WP:PAIN's admin?
  7. That's when the hell broke lose. Instead of replying to my questions, Durova suggested that posting my questions at his/hers talk page equals disrupting Wikipedia. As I remove all sorts of accusations and threats from my talk page so I did with that one, but soon afterwards Durova finally replied to my original questions, for which I thanked him/her. I received even more explanations, which is more that I could have asked for. However, he/she also stated, that he/she could no longer extend an assumption of good faith toward claims you might make in some future dispute. I responded in kind and stated that I'll think twice before I trust your judgement in the future, which is pretty much the same.
  8. I also asked how should I interpret Ghirlandajo's comment, in which he suggested I'm a (check WP:DICK for yourselves).
  9. However, despite the fact that it was Ghirlandajo to offend me and I was merely seeking advice from one of the admins responsible for WP:PAIN, Durova accused me of breaking the rules (including WP:POINT, WP:CIVIL, WP:AGF, and WP:NPA).

Now then, I agree. It is me to blame for the fact that Ghirlandajo directed me to WP:DICK and suggested I'm a (check for yourselves). It is me to blame for the fact that I was seeking advice with the admin. It's entirely my fault that I remained friendly and informative throughout all of my contacts with Durova. And I should definitely be blocked for that. I'm also hereby warning myself: should Ghirlandajo offend me once more, I should be blocked indefinitely. //Halibutt 19:14, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Arriba Halibutt

Dear Halibutt:

Just by accident, in the Appleseed talk page I had notice about the voting from admin.. Unfortunately it was too late. It was finished. I would be very happy to support you as well as you help me when I suffered a persecution like in pl:wiki some time ago.

This kind of voting should be more promoted as the financial admin. are. Anyway, here is my "moral" support.

Hasta pronto, amigo mio. Gustavo Szwedowski de Korwin 19:55, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Escadrille

Hi Halibutt, can you tell me what is the difference between an air force squadron and an escadrille? I found categories for both (Category:Polish Air Force escadrilles and Category:Squadrons of the Polish Air Force), and I don't know if they're redundant or not. Appleseed (Talk) 16:18, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, I think that answered it. I asked because I was wondering if we were justified in having both categories (based on your answer, we are), and if one should be a subcategory of the other (I think the answer is no, because even though a squadron is composed of escadrilles, the category structure gets funky if you place the latter inside the former). Appleseed (Talk) 18:04, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Warsaw Uprising

Hi. I guess I was concerned less about the content than the fact the editor was sourcing it from OR. But looking at the article, I note it cites very few sources for the bulk of the information it contains. It'd be hard to know where to start dropping the fact tags. It might be better just to flag it unreferenced. --Rrburke 15:07, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for you reply. You wrote, "there are more such tasks pending." For this and another several hundred thousand other articles. It can seem daunting. --Rrburke 17:22, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Warsaw Uprising

In reply to your note. First, the recollections of those old heroes from WWII must have been a tremendous experience for you. as to my father: he started flying with 300 Squadron when he escaped from Switzerland (Polish infantry)by way of France, Andorra, Portugal and finally Gibraltar in 1941. He then switched to 301 where he spent the rest of war years. He started as a gunner/radio operator on Wellingtons and then ended up as a navigator/bombadeer on Halifaxes, Liberators and as a navigator on dakota DC3's. Most of his missions were over France and Germany through early 1944 I think.

When 301 moved to Brindizi as No. 1586 Polish Special Duties Flight, he flew over Yugoslavia a few times and then exclusively over Poland, mostly night drops in the country to the AK and then flights over Warsaw during the Uprising. Most of these Polish flights were solo (not as a squadron) and, believe it or not, involved landings with a DC-3 on fields made up of clover (which the AK found out could support a heavy aircraft).

In the end he totalled 80 missions (20 with 1586), was awarded the Virtuti Militari, Cross of Valorous (x4), British DFC and Air Force Cross and some other stuff, and French Croix de Guerre (for exploits as part of Polish infantry division in france in 1940). --Vumba 01:35, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps I should start work on the Sqn 301 page with the info I have. --Vumba 17:30, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Ru-sib

Halibutt, please understand that linking to Ru-sib undermines the integrity of en-wiki. See user talk:A4 for discussion. Even if your instincts tell you to oppose everything done by Wikipedia's "Russians" based on the general principle, delinking the ru-sib has nothing to do with Russian Chauvinism and has everything to do with the integrity of Wikipedia, which I know you cherish. Please give it a thought. --Irpen 07:09, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

I have absolutely no idea what you're bragging about. //Halibutt 08:43, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

I am talking about this edit of yourself. You link to the hate-speech site that promotes xenophobia, obscenity and ethnic hatred. If you want to know more, visit user talk:A4 (you can skip the Ukrainian text there, if it is difficult for you to read. I tried to conduct as much of the discussion in English as possible). I don't know what motives brought you to that article, the interest to the topic, Ghirla-stalking or an email request to join a revert war but as a Wikipedia enthusiast, I don't suppose you appreciate its being linked to hate sites. --Irpen 18:19, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Coat of Arms of Piast Dynasty

Dear Halibutt:

I would like to publish your image (found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PB_Piast2_CoA.png) on the cover of our newest manuscript. I work with a scholarly journal, the Carl Beck Papers in Russian and East European Studies, and request your permission to publish this image with a credit line reading:

Coat of Arms of Piast Dynasty, by Halibutt in Blender and GIMP, Wikipedia Commons. Licence can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License.

My job at the Center for Russian and East European Studies (www.ucis.pitt.edu/crees/), at the University of Pittsburgh, is non-profit and we publish in-house. Because we print only in paperback, including the entire GNU Free Documentation Licence will take up too much space, and I hope you permit me to instead use the above credit line (or another that you suggest).

Many thanks,

Vera Dorosh, Editorial Assistant, The Carl Beck Papers, University of Pittsburgh, Center for Russian and East European Studies, cbpapers@ucis.pitt.edu

Poster

Hi Halibutt, I recently came across an image of a Soviet propaganda poster. It depicted a Soviet soldier kissing his "Ukrainian-Belarussian brother", a peasant. I can't remember if it was related to the Polish-Soviet War or the September Campaign. I can't find it now. I don't suppose you have seen it? Appleseed (Talk) 01:48, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

"oppression" towards Georgian royal dynasty...

Would you like to check a situation where certain persons (see e.g [1]) are pushing towards POV that Georgian princes were not noble enough to marry Russians otherwise than as morganatic consorts. Contemporary evidence of course is conflicting, as are later treatises (because there exists precisely two contrary POVs) - but- surprise surprise - some are wanting to erase other side's references away from the article. Are you surprised? Shilkanni 14:41, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

Piotrus, if you again feel like looking for a pretence for a Ghirla's block, you report him yourself and sign the report with your own name rather than sneakily incite others, like you did earlier. I find it very sad that seeking for the opponents' blocks is becoming your favored tactic. --Irpen 18:52, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
Maybe that's a wrong diff, but I don't see anything out of bounds in it... "I believe Lethiere's edits should be reinstated." is a perfectly OK sentence. -- Grafikm (AutoGRAF) 19:41, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
I see that I have been misrepresented to you. I do not believe that the Mukhraneli were dynastically unequal to the Romanovs, during or after the Russian Empire. I do believe that they were treated as legally unequal by Nicholas II in 1911. But that decision was reversed by Vladimir Kirilovich in 1948. Nicholas II made one decision, and Vladmir, in the claimed capacity as emperor de jure, made another -- and cited specific research as the basis for that reversal. There are simply no contemporaneous sources that considered the 1911 marriage equal, and there is enormous evidence that it was not considered equal. This issue has been extensively discussed, but after the Frederiks Memo was published in the West in the late 1990s (it was an intra-dynastic communication, not published during the Empire), no serious historian any longer disputes that the Bagration-Mukhranskys were only allowed to inter-marry with Romanovs on a non-dynastic basis at that time. I personally believe that they were unfairly treated by Russia in defiance of the Treaty of Georgievsk, but Wikipedia should state how the family was viewed then -- and now, rather than project current views backward. As for "anti-Georgian", a quick glance at the argument that raised this issue will show you immediately who has been making up all kinds of reasons to invalidate the dynastic claim of the Vladimirovichi pretender Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna of Russia, whose rival bases his opposition on the argument that the family of Maria's Georgian mother, Princess Leonida Georgievna Bagration-Moukhransky, was not dynastically equal to the Romanovs when the couple married.

So much for the season of goodwill!

So much for the season of goodwill! Would it be possible to tone down your user page message slightly. I don't recall you reporting death threats by Ghirla, so my guess is that that claim is slightly overblown. Perhaps you can come up with something more accurate? Would you like to join Piotrus and Ghirla in having Durova mediate your complaints? You could get Doctor Dan involved too. All the best, Angus McLellan (Talk) 22:36, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Since you don't seem to have time to fix it, I've done it for you. If Durova won't do, think about finding an alternative mediator. The only alternative is arbitration. Cheers, Angus McLellan (Talk) 23:46, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. There's nothing anyone can do to unwrite the things that you mention. It would be a great loss to Wikipedia if you left, so I hope that you will stay. Please think about joining the mediation with Piotrus and Ghirla: Durova is a fine editor, not one of Ghirla's IRC fairies, and I'm sure she'd do her best to be fair to all concerned. I know you had problems before, but I'm quite sure that need not matter. Best wishes, Angus McLellan (Talk) 10:54, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree with Angus here, per my comment at PAIN. We all know you have been attacked, but this is no reason to start acting like your opponents. They are used to gross incivility, you aren't, so you will only hurt yourself more and make neutral editors confused at who is at fault here. At the very least, present diffs when you are accusing people of 'death threats' (for Glod's sake...). Or just WP:DFTT - ignore them and create content. And last but not least, it's not good to lump all Lithuanian contributors in one group, you know well that we have met many reasonable and civil editors from that part of the world (DeirYassin, to name just one) - let's not look at the entire community through the prismat of few bad apples. Wesołych Świąt, pamiętaj że na każdego trolla jest stu ludzi którzy cię podziwiają...-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  19:33, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

It's not true. They are warned by others, too, they just chose to ignore it. The entire civility enforcement on Wiki is in a very bad shape - but in the end, it seems to work; it appears that we will finally get Ghirla to agree to a civility parole. And if the others you mention persist in their accusations, they will be penalized as well - feel free to report them to PAIN or start DRs. Alas, if you will imitate their ways, you will also suffer. I may or may not agree with you that all of those people exhibit behavior of a 'troll', but I'll defend their right not to be called like that in public until proven guilty by a DR procedure - just as I am defending you, and I defended others (Molobo being probably my most infamous case where I insisted the rules should be the same for everyone...). So please, don't make my life more complicated and don't imitate them - please hold the 'superior moral ground', write content, and WP:DFTT. In the end, as annoying as some of those editors may occasionally be on talk, they don't prevent you from content creation. They are loud, but they are barely a footnote in history of Wikipedia, compared to you, the 168-most active editor, who should not even bother too let yourself be distracted by a bunch of editors throwing insults, dwelling on talk and doing 1% of your work in article space.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  16:14, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
Let me poke one important hole in your argument. While Wiki indeed is a job where you can find some extremly uncivil collegues that are hard to punish, for each of those, there are dozens of other hardworking guys, and at least several who will pat you on your back and call you friend and 'good chap' and even give you barnstars and such. Why care about the minority? Personally I think that an important thing to make Wiki civil problem go away is to increase the power of WP:PAIN: a single incivility, after a first-time warning, should be punishable by a block. We are slowly getting there. WP:PAIN didn't exist a year ago. It may be too cautious today, but this can only change for the better - and maybe you could contribute there and help with your voice? Also, going back to the 'incivil collegues' issue: there are just a few of them. One is getting a civility parole. Others will learn or get similar treatment, until we can all work in peace. That said, I'll remind you once again that calling people trolls or even nationalists is no different from what they are doing... please, please, don't descend to their level.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  02:03, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm extremely disappointed that M.K. took this to WP:PAIN. I've left him a note, I hope he pays attention. Hope the weather in Warsaw is fine and that you are well. Nil carborundum. Angus McLellan (Talk) 23:17, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm rather extremely disappointed by your attitude, Angus. If you think Halibutt is a saint, you're very much mistaken <_< -- Grafikm (AutoGRAF) 00:58, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Ghirla and Piotr have agreed to try mediation with me. JzG who initiated the arbitration request has asked the committee to give this a chance to work. If you'd like to provide input your comments are welocme at User talk:Durova/Mediation/Input. I'd appreciate if you'd append your comment at the arbitration request to allow mediation unless you really want the formal case to go forward. DurovaCharge! 23:09, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Poland Tag

Thank you for that information. I actually shouldn't have tagged them as needing a fair use rationale in the method I did because they were uploaded prior to May 4, 2006. That's why the tag was removed from the image pages and I deleted all the notices here. I apologize for my error. I wouldn't feel right removing the fair use tag, because the Poland tag is a little wish-washy and not perfectly clear if it alone is enough. Perhaps you could propose a change to the tag that would make it clear that it's from the Poland government which has agreed to release it under GDFL (or whatever). Then you could remove the fair use tags. If not, someone like me may come along and (properly) WP:IFD them because they don't have a rationale (and were uploaded before May 4, 2006). Thanks again for the explanation and good luck! --MECUtalk 20:38, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

LUBUSZ y no LEBUS

Estimado Halibutt:

Many thanks for enlightening answers at the Jagiello article. At all costs, please revert any of my changes wherever you wish: the article is very much yours (I found your referencing impeccable and it taught me a few things).

Apropos, would you consider a pleasant trip downtown to the Warsaw Public Library to snap some photos of Warsaw's (and possibly Poland's) greatest writer, Bolesław Prus? He is to be found in a jubilee portrait painted in 1897 by Antoni Kamieński, in celebration of Prus' 50th birthday and 25 years in journalism. It's a very attractive likeness that well reflects his personality. A full-length photograph, and another photo of his head and shoulders, would be a great asset to Wikipedia and Wikimedia.

Halibutt:

please stop vandalizing the List of Ukrainians. The text at the top of this list clearly states its scope:

This is a partial list of famous or notable people of who are ethnically Ukrainian, speak/write in the Ukrainian language, were important to the development of Ukraine culturally or politically, or who were born on today's Ukrainian territory. In the interest of fairness and accuracy, a minority of persons of mixed or foreign heritage have their respective ancestries credited.

Thus, acknowledging the Lviv mathematicians as Ukrainian (or Ukrainian and Polish) is within the scope and the intention of the List of Ukrainians.

You also made numerous chauvinistic remarks (e.g. attacking the Ukrainian wikipedia). Please stop this kind of behavior, as it severely undermines the spirit of this project. Behave European.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.180.67.179 (talkcontribs) 18:36, 18 January 2007 (UTC).

== Infobox Poland - need a helping hand ==

Hi
can you please give me a helping hand / some ideas? This box has to be updated and synchronized to a proper international standard.
As you can see I did some changes to the "Infobox Poland". Please have a look at three examples: Opatowek, Kalisz and Kalisz County

1) The old infobox is wrong (powiat is not council, it is county) please see wikipedia
2) The Infobox should be much better structured / headlines... Same cheme for Infoboxes for other countries (Ex.: UK, Germany, US...)
- but how can we solve the headline problem so that it fits for cities as well as for villages and districts? Can we do a kind of "if...town ...then...else district"?

I will update all towns in Poland to the new Format (if we have created a nice final version) ;-)
Best regards
(Fujicolor 17:33, 18 January 2007 (UTC)) PS: Please have a look as example to Opatowek (Wikipedia Germany)

thank you for your quick reply!
ok, I did not know that there are other infoboxes for Polish Districts / villages. nevertheless, most of my comments are still true: 1) Powiat= county and not council
2) economy and other important info were missing (international standard)
3) headlines are still helpful
Can you please name me a good infobox for villages / countys?
maybe you can also help making a good infobox for both ;-)
tx
(Fujicolor 20:22, 19 January 2007 (UTC))
Hi again
please have a short look at the infobox right now. Please compare two examples: Katowice as an example for a large city and Opatowek as example for a rural commune (a village called opatowek and also the commune is called Opatowek but contains 27 other villages). As I understand it works like that most times in Poland. There is a city Powiat (ex: Kalisz) and a county powiat (ex: Kalisz County) usually with the same name as the city. This Infobox should work well with it.
How do you think about the box right now? What would you like to change / add / remove? Should we still make two boxes?
Please give me some feedback
Best regards (Fujicolor 12:57, 20 January 2007 (UTC))

"converting" to SVG

Hallibutt, I have been a fan of your maps for some time. I particularly like the colors that you use. Of course, your maps are wonderfully big all-inclusive ones, with detail, detail, and more detail. Mine, on the other hand, are intended to show a smaller area, or less detail within the larger area, so that they can be read alongside the article. There is certainly a need for both types of maps within Wikipedia.

Regarding converting your maps to SVG format, my suggestion is not to. First, I don't see much benefit. Most of my maps are SVG, and SVG is nice because they can easily be edited (by someone else), particularly to change the language. But the reader won't notice any difference.

SVG also has drawbacks. In fact, I will at times publish a map in PNG even if it was created in SVG format because Wikipedia won't render that SVG correctly.

And it would not be easy to convert your maps. In fact, I would say that "convert" will quickly become "re-create". I believe that there are so many articles that still need maps -- and that there are so many bad maps out there -- that we are better off creating new maps than trying to "convert" ("re-draw") the old ones. If it is critical that the PNGs become SVGs, the SVG zealots should provide a stronger justification or they should do it themselves.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Keep up the good work. We need folks like you in Wikipedia. Don't let the %#(#%&*( get you down. Your fan, MapMaster 13:39, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Funny, so I totally misunderstood.  : )
I am glad to hear you are planning on adding to your maps, rather than converting your present maps to SVG.

>>I'll think I'll try to re-create the map using one I already have as a back-up layer.<<

I think that this is a good idea. To be honest, I create my maps almost exclusively by hand-tracing (or rather mouse-tracing) over existing maps. I can "import" (Ctrl+I) this or that map, trace over the parts that I want, then delete the other map/object. I've tried the auto-trace functions within Inkscape (Shift+Alt+B), but they took me a long time for an inferior result.

>>Speaking of which, it seems to me that the Inkshape's layer management is somehow flawed. The tiny field on the bottom of the screen is supposed to show the current layer, but it seems that my objects and paths do constantly change the layer they're in regardless of what I do. Do you know of any way to make the menu do what it should - preferably in the GIMP-stylish way?<<

I am unfamiliar with GIMP and I'm still new at Inkscape, despite having used it for many months now. I'm not really sure what that little "Layer" box at the lower-left does. All my objects always appear on "Layer 1". I use the Home, End, PageUp, and PageDown keys to stack them properly. I just learned about the Tab key, which cycles thru each object from the bottom up and is useful for finding objects that have fallen out of sight.
You had asked earlier about fonts. For cities and towns and rivers, I generally use Arial Narrow, which allows me to fit more words on the page. Sometimes I will use plain old Arial, which really is the only font that Wikipedia will translate properly (in fact, it will translate every font into (plain) Arial). I will change any other font from an object into a path (Shift+Ctrl+C). By the way, whenever I use Shift+Ctrl+C, the path nodes are always connected, so I didn't understand your earlier question.
Hope this helps!! MapMaster 18:20, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

"Ethnic maps"

Hi, I am replying you to your comment. I was asking about other side of the border (that some more Lithuanian speaking areas were taken to Poland then; but as I do not remember now where I saw the map, I removed my saying).

If you know (as you have intimated: And so we come up with "ethnic maps" showing no Poles on the other side of the border) some Poles who make majority in some other villages of Lithuania nobody prevents you from painting this with solid dye.

Your explantion of not-showing nowadays Polish majority beyond the once existed, past Lithuanian-Polish border is not correctly enough, I think. It suggests: one can show Polish majority of nowadays only in that territory where Poland once (in past) had a quite brief but also quite great donation to exist (that (by the way ethnic) territory of Lithuania was gotten illegitimately by Poland). There are no Poland there, you should ignore that border when representing Polish majority. And in fact, there should be two maps: one showing inhabitants who consider themselves to be Poles by 1920 and border of Poland and Lithuania, and other can be mixed: nationality of nowadays, but the border of past.

I don't agree with your bipolar statement that nationality wasn't crucial in Poland. What I've read present practically diametrically different situation. What I‘ve read was that mentioned pro-state loyality practically meant Polish nationality, any loyality was unloyality if you weren‘t a proponent of Polish language. In Poland the authorities were pro-state and didn't care much for the nationality of the inhabitants, as long as they were loyal. Well, there were no place for Lithuanian language and one who spoke Lithuanian was considered unloyal of itself; Lithuanian schools were being closed, Lithuanian and Belarusian languages was considered to be of low worth. Catholic was identified to be Pole by the government and accordingly by pressured but faithful non-Polish speaking catholics. Different wording or declarations of politicians don't change the meaning. There is the fact for example form Dziatlava (Lith. Zietela) (during Polish rule) that Lithuanian school was being delayed to legitimate and Lithuanian pupils were droven to Polish school. After a few years the school was closed at all, its stock expropriated. When Lithuanians would be heard to speak Lithuanian they would be bawled by Poles right off. This is only one example, but generally there was a trend to write Lithuanians to be Poles in the Second Polish Republic and do not tolerate Lithuanian language at all. Two quotations: Jurgis Matulaitis (about the laity): Hatred between the nations is most flaming here. Poles here simply do not acknowledge Lithuanians and Belarusians. [...] When one wants to preach in Belarusian for Belarusians [Belarusian speakers], they can‘t stand it, even resist. Local Lithuanian of Šalčininkai, M. Rimpa said (in 1963): Who spoke Lithuanian then, that one was not a human. Dellijks 17:12, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

WP:RFI discussion

I appreciated your comments in the WP:RFI discussion: "Wikipedia has a serious problem. If you violate 3RR, you're blocked almost instantly. However, if you resort to trolling, personal remarks or other types of generally disrupting behaviour, there is little that can be done to punish you or force you to change your ways. WP:PAIN does not work as efficiently as it should, nor does simple admin's conscience. I support any initiative that helps in dealing with users who make content creation more difficult - including this one. As Dan put it, absolute incivility is not to be supported - and any force that fights against it is by definition on the good guys' side."

"Trolling, personal remarks or other generally disrupting behaviour" is what I have been facing. No administrator seems to be willing to do anything that is effective in controlling this problem. Image sizes

While default image sizes are usually fine, images with severe aspect ratios generally need a specific width set so that they aren't at a strange size relative to the other images. For example, if you have two images, one at a 10:1 aspect ration and one at a 1:10 aspect ratio, and they are both set to default image size, the second image is going to be 100 times bigger than the other image! You'll see that the two images I set the width for both have rather extreme aspect ratios, and thus look strangely small at the default image size (relative to the other images). calling my edits vandalism constitutes a personal attack, and I would appreciate if you do not do it. what is wrong with calling an article by its actual title anyways? is it offensive if I call you Halibutt?

--Jadger 22:46, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

I would like to know how you know my emotions better than I do? Also, I said it was a personal attack, you don't need to offend someone for it to be a personal attack. And as I stated on those relevant pages, they are unreferenced because those "references" that were said to state what is claimed in the articles do not actually state that. I had the references translated, and nowhere in them does it state that 7 people were murdered.

I would like to ask you again, what is wrong with calling an article by its actual title anyways? streamlining certainly isn't counter-productive as you claim. I ask you to please stop personally attacking me as you have done so again, or I will be forced to ask admin to interfere.

Re: Polish-Soviet War Campaignbox

Eh, not sure. I suppose we could do a purely chronological split by year, just to get the overall size down; but, as you said, that would be a pretty artificial separation. Is there some more natural place to split the war into multiple parts? Kirill Lokshin 13:42, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

There's no good way of implementing the show/hide functionality; it's sort of discouraged in article-space templates because it's broken for a fair number of people. (And, frankly, I'm not convinced that institutionalizing a "major battle"/"minor battle" distinction is a good idea in any case; it's another great place for disputes, particularly on a topic that's already seen its fair share of those.)
Personally, I don't see any problems with a chronological breakdown, even if it's not very linked thematically; but, as you obviously know a lot more about the war than I do, I'll leave actually deciding where to break it up to you. :-) Kirill Lokshin 14:08, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

About Polish clans, Polish families and Polish coats of arms

Dear friends:

If you have some extra time, I would appreciate if you can take a look to Category:Coats of arms of clans of Poland and Category:Polish nobility coats of arms images, mainly the Talk pages.

There is an Italian wikipedian, who knows nothing about Polish history and Polish szlachta and he is rearranging the categories in Category:Coats of arms of Poland

In commons he is User:G.dallorto

My point of view may have some mistakes but I would thank you very much your thought and your discussion on this issue.

As today I got few time I am sending this same message to:

If you know somebody else interested in Polish heraldry and Polish szlachta, please invite him to join this Discussion.

Best regards, my friends, and thank you by your answer to this request. --Gustavo 08:11, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

AfD nomination of German Soldier's House

An editor has nominated German Soldier's House, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/German Soldier's House and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. --Ng.j 20:05, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Kiev Beregini front.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Kiev Beregini front.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 00:08, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Points taken

Deafening lack of sourced article-edits from the Russian-speaking editors, which has left me trying to clarify Soviet POV myself.

Piotrus asked me to help copy-edit this article. For me that is a major job and means looking into sources because only then am I likely to find the right words for these complexities. The more the objectors leave me to edit the article, the harder they will find it to water it down later, because I have added a good deal of referenced material which they won't be entitled to remove. It seems to me, actually, that the more one clarifies the Soviet POV, the worse Soviet behaviour looks. I would be genuinely interested if the NPOV objectors could bring some referenced analysis to the article that would alter its well-referenced and increasingly nuanced picture of Soviet behaviour—I like complexities and am almost disappointed that the objections remain so vague—but as you said in a different context, it's no good just talking about it, they must do the work. qp10qp 13:38, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Please review this article that I created by renaming and building on Treatment of Polish citizens by occupiers which was originally extracted from History of Poland (1939-1945). Piotrus has argued that the expanded scope of this article duplicates History of Poland (1939-1945) and wishes to move it back to Treatment of Polish citizens by occupiers.

I don't like the title Treatment of Polish citizens by occupiers because it sounds unencyclopedic to me. Moreover, the History of Poland (1939-1945) covers

  1. Nazi and Soviet invasions,
  2. the Nazi and Soviet occupation,
  3. the Nazi invasion of eastern Poland,
  4. the Nazi occupation of eastern Poland, and
  5. the liberation of Poland by the Soviets.

Occupation of Poland (1939-1945) covers only phases 2 & 4.

Do you agree that there is enough material in Occupation of Poland (1939-1945) to justify it being a separate article from History of Poland (1939-1945)?

No, of course I don't mind. I can always go back through it after you're done.

Actually, a better approach to this might be for me to wait until you are done (or reasonable confident that you're done) with each section. That way, I don't edit something that you intend to rewrite - or perhaps cut out completely! Maybe you can list the sections that are ready for copyedit either on my talk or the article talk? Hi, i know you don't mean this when you ask for information on estonian etc. frontlines, but i advise you just check it with estonian people . since many speak english. I remember they have something of the kind in popular literature. Also i remember a story de old grandmother told me, that soldiers went all over europe in during or after world war one, and that estonian elements reached as far as hungary after liberating Riga. If that makes sense to you.(it does to me now). Your post makes me think that we perhaps miscomprehend the war between 1918 and 1920. Also the polish apparently give it a more general name. I personally think now the struggle against russia / bolshevism was just to much organised to speak of frontiers for estonian or latvian people, outside their own territorys, or closely beyond, wich is also what they say themselves: they stopped fighting not halfway leningrad.77.248.56.242 16:51, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

There was an interesting article in a prominent Polish newspaper recently stating that the photograph was taken in 1924 and was of 4 children who had been murdered by their deranged mother who was of Roma ethnicity.

Four killed Roma children tied to tree by their mentally ill mother after her husband was arrested and her Roma group dissolved. The murder took place in night of 11/12 December 1923

The alleged barbed wire are just folds in the photograph.

Polish Armed Forces

Hi Halibutt, I'm currently working on a project to create graphics of the structure of all the important Armies. i.e. Australian Army, German Army, Italian Army. A full listing of the finished graphics can be found at commons:Category:Military OrBat Graphics. I would also like (very much) to create a graphic of the Polish Army, especially as it is the last big Army in Europe I have not created a graphic off! I could create such a graphic immediately if someone would translate the Polish Articles about the Army into English. I tried for months now to find a Polish editor to do just that... alas, posting such a request on every page about the Polish Army on the polish wikipedia has yielded no results. Therefore I would like to ask you, if you were interested in helping me? It looks to me, that almost all information needed already exist at: and the Armies divisions pages:

but i do not speak Polish and therefore I can only grasp some of the text there. i.e. the - I understand that this is "6th Armoured Cavalry Brigade" and the structure is as follows:

  • Batalion dowodzenia (dowodzenia=HQ/Command Support???)
  • 1 Batalion czołgów (czołgów=Tank???)
  • 2 Batalion czołgów
  • Batalion zmechanizowany (mechanized Infantry - I guess)
  • Dywizjon artylerii samobieżnej (Artillery samobieżnej??? Dywizjon=Group???)
  • Dywizjon przeciwlotniczy
  • Kompania rozpoznawcza
  • Kompania remontowa
  • Kompania zaopatrzenia
  • Kompania medyczna (Medical Company)
  • Kompania saperów (Sapper Comapny???)

/wcześniej w strukturze istniał jeszcze trzeci batalion czołgów a pododdziały logistyczne były zgrupowane w batalionie logistycznym/ (no idea what this sentence means!)

If could help and translate the material and provide me with the units that are missing (i.e. with the Brygada Zmechanizowana Legionów) we could create the graphic quickly and insert it and the information about the Polish Army into the English articles and if I would also be willing to create a Polish version of the graphic- as I did with the Czech Army. thanks, --noclador 09:09, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. It enabled me to create a graphic of the 12th Mechanized Division. There is still much information missing and I have some questions:
  • "bateria przeciwpancerna" - I translated it as Anti-Tank Missile Battery...
  • What does "Legionów" mean?
  • The units of the , & are missing. I could not find this information on the homepages of the Brigades too: 2nd, 12th, 36th. Also the battalions of the 3rd Air-Defence Regiment are nowhere to be found. Do you have any idea, where or from whom we could get this information?
I will do the other 3 divisions over the next days and then merge them with the Support Brigades to create a complete (minus the missing units) graphic of the Polish Army.
I saw your 1939 map of Poland. It is one of the best maps out there! Much better than all the maps scanned and uploaded from the US-Army. I would only suggest to cut the Soviet territory- everything east of Kyiv and north of Riga isn't very much of interest. And btw: you do amazing work (and an amazing amount of work too) here on wikipedia :-) --noclador 09:49, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Polish Land Forces

I finished the Graphic of the Polish Army and added it to the Polish Land Forces article. But I have still many questions and many Brigades units are missing.

  • First I have some questions about units that I already was able to include in the graphic:
    • Is "Batalionu Piechoty Zmotoryzowanej" correctly translated as “Motorized Battalion”?  Done
    • What are: "kompania łączności", "kompania ochrony i regulacji ruchu", "kompania wsparcia".
    • I translated “Batalion Powietrznodesantowy” as Paratrooper Battalion. Correct?  Done
    • 10th Logistics Brigade:  Done
      • What does “składowania” mean?  Done
      • What does “ewakuacji sprzętu” mean?  Done
    • 23 Śląska Brygada Artylerii under the link "Struktura BA" you will find the Brigades units: What does “dra” mean? I made a Rocket Artillery Group of it…  Done
    • I translated “Pułk Samochodowy” as Transport Regiment.  Done
    • I translated “Pułk Ochrony” as Protection Battalion.  Done
    • Does “batalionów łączności” mean “Signal Battalion”?  Done
  • Secondly: there is a long list of regiments and battalions listed in the . I tried to translate these units, but I do not know where they belong to. Which command is responsible for these units.
    • Samodzielne pułki
      • 14 Suwalski Pułk Artylerii Przeciwpancernej (Suwałki) = 14th Anti-Tank Rgt..
      • 4 Pułk Przeciwlotniczy (Czerwieńsk) = 4th Air Defence Rgt.
      • 8 Koszaliński Pułk Przeciwlotniczy (Koszalin) = 8th Air Defence Rgt
      • 1 Dębliński Pułk Drogowo-Mostowy (Dęblin) - jednostka Pomorskiego OW = ???
      • 2 Inowrocławski Pułk Komunikacyjny (Inowrocław) = 2nd Signals or PsyOps Rgt.?
      • 3 Włocławski Pułk Drogowo-Mostowy (Włocławek) - jednostka Śląskiego OW = ???
      • 5 Pułk Inżynieryjny (Szczecin) = ???
      • 9 Pułk Dowodzenia(Białobrzegi) = 9th Command Btn.
      • 49 Pułk Śmigłowców Bojowych (Pruszcz Gdański) = ???
      • 56 Kujawski Pułk Śmigłowców Bojowych (Inowrocław) = ???
      • 1 Pułk Specjalny Komandosów (Lubliniec) = 1st Special Forces Rgt.
      • 2 Hrubieszowski Pułk Rozpoznawczy (Hrubieszów) = 2nd Reconnaissance Rgt. – is this a Special Forces unit?
      • 9 Warmiński Pułk Rozpoznawczy (Lidzbark Warmiński) = 9th Reconnaissance Rgt. – is this a Special Forces unit?
      • 4 Pułk Chemiczny (Brodnica) = NBC Rgt.
    • Samodzielne bataliony i kompanie
      • 100 Batalion Łączności (Szczecin) – jednostka Międzynarodowego Korpusu Północ-Wschód = 100th Signals Btn.
      • 8 Batalion Walki Radioelektronicznej (Grudziądz) = 8th Signals Btn.
      • 11 Batalion Walki Radioelektronicznej (Legnica) = 11th Signals Btn.
      • 5 Batalion Chemiczny (Tarnowskie Góry) = 5th NBC Btn.
      • 1 Batalion Zabezpieczenia Dowództwa Wojsk Lądowych (Warszawa) = ???
      • 1 Kujawsko-Pomorski Batalion Zabezpieczenia Okręgu Wojskowego (Bydgoszcz) = ???
      • 2 Batalion Dowodzenia Okręgu Wojskowego (Wrocław) = 2nd Command Btn. ??
      • 28 Batalion Dowozu Amunicji = 28 Ammunition Btn.
      • 3 bataliony remontowe (52, 55, 112) = Maintenance Btn.
      • 8 batalionów zaopatrzenia (75, 82, 86, 91, 95, 97, 107, 122) = Supply Btn.
      • 6 batalionów ratownictwa inżynieryjnego (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) = ???
      • ponadto m. in. 2 kompanie kontroli ruchu 2 kompanie transportu ciężkiego itp. = ???
  • Third: These are the Brigades of which I could not find any information and therefore they are only in the graphic with the Brigade icon, but all their units are missing.

Can you help? thanks, --noclador 16:57, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi, user:Radomil has helped with the first batch of questions. The only open questions in the first part are now: What does "kompania wsparcia" mean? Can I translate "kompania ochrony i regulacji ruchu" as Military Police company? --noclador 09:43, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Czernicki_Xawery.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Czernicki_Xawery.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 20:14, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Image:Monte Cassino troops.jpg

Hello, this is Snoddy from norwegian wikipedia. In the norwegian wikipedia, we have this competition, kind of like the english wp's Danny's contest. In that competition, I'm competiting with the article no:Slaget om Monte Cassino (the same as the en, wp's Battle of Monte Cassino). There you have uploaded the picture

locally, and I want to ask you if you can upload it on wikipedia commons? Please do so or contact me on my norwegian user talk page any time. 81.167.3.234 09:08, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Fair use disputed for Image:AK trains.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:AK trains.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. effeietsanders 21:02, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

The source is still needed. Please, pay your attention to next feature: Source information must be provided so that the copyright status can be verified by others. Alex Spade 17:11, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

I already provided the source. The leaflet is unsigned, nor is the photo. Should I invent an ISBN number just to make you happy? //Halibutt 14:14, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
As variant. This picture is candidate for reloadind to Commons. Alex Spade 11:21, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

The above case is closed. A general amnesty for editors involved in Eastern Europe-related articles is extended, with the expectation that further editing will adhere to Wikipedia's policies. Future behavior problems may be addressed by the Arbitration Committee on the motion of any Arbitrator or upon acceptance of a request for inquiry by any user who edits in this area.
