If you are using GitHub Enterprise Cloud with EMU and using OpenID Connect (OIDC) SSO, this new feature, currently in public preview, will help enforce IdP-defined IP restrictions to protect all web interactions on GitHub.

Currently, when your enterprise uses OIDC-based SSO and if any of the enterprise members change their IP address, GitHub can validate their access to your enterprise and its resources using your IdP’s Conditional Access Policy (CAP). IdP CAP validations previously covered only non-interactive flows where users authenticate with a personal access token or SSH key.

With this launch, we are now extending these validations to include all interactive web flows. If you already had IdP CAP turned ON previously, you will need to explicitly opt-in into extended protection for web sessions from their enterprise’s “Authentication security” settings. If you enable IdP CAP support after today’s public preview launch, you will get the coverage across web flows by default.

When this feature is generally available, we plan to have both interactive and non-interactive flows protected by the IdP CAP validations for all customers by default and remove the additional step of requiring to opt-in.

For securely enabling OpenID Connect (OIDC) in your reusable workflows, we are now making the permissions more restrictive.

If you need to fetch an OIDC token generated within a reusable (called) workflow that is outside your enterprise/organization, then the permissions setting for id-token should now be explicitly set to write at the caller workflow level or in the specific job that calls the reusable workflow.

id-token: write # This is required for requesting the JWT

This change would ensure that the OIDC token generated in the called workflow is allowed to be consumed in the caller workflows only when intended.

OpenID Connect (OIDC) support in GitHub Actions enables secure cloud deployments using short-lived tokens that are automatically rotated for each deployment.
Each OIDC token includes standard claims like the audience, issuer, subject and many more custom claims that uniquely define the workflow job that generated the token. These claims can be used to define fine grained trust policies to control the access to specific cloud roles and resources.

  • We now support more custom claims within the token : actor_id, repository_id, repository_owner_id
    workflow_ref, workflow_sha and job_workflow_sha – to help uniquely verify the source of a workflow job, even if the job references a reusable workflow.
  • We are also adding these new attributes as default environment variables and also to github context

These changes enable developers to define more advanced access policies using OpenID connect and do more secure cloud deployments at scale with GitHub Actions.

OpenID Connect (OIDC) support in GitHub Actions enables secure cloud deployments using short-lived tokens that are automatically rotated for each deployment.

You can now use the enhanced OIDC support to configure the subject claim format within the OIDC tokens, by defining a customization template at either org or repo levels. Once the configuration is completed, the new OIDC tokens generated during each deployment will follow the custom format.

This enables organization & repository admins to standardize OIDC configuration across their cloud deployment workflows that suits their compliance & security needs.

OpenID Connect (OIDC) support in GitHub Actions is now enhanced to support secure cloud deployments at scale.

Org & repo admins can use the new OIDC API support to:

  • enable a standard OIDC configuration across their cloud deployment workflows by customizing the subject claim format.
  • ensure additional compliance & security for their OIDC based deployments by appending the issuer url with their enterprise slug
  • configure advanced OIDC policies by using the additional OIDC token claims like repository_id and repo_visibility.

GitHub Actions now supports OpenID Connect (OIDC) for secure deployments to cloud, which uses short-lived tokens that are automatically rotated for each deployment.
This enables:

  • Seamless authentication between Cloud Providers and GitHub without the need for storing any long-lived cloud secrets in GitHub
  • Cloud Admins can rely on the security mechanisms of their cloud provider to ensure that GitHub Actions workflows get the minimal access for cloud resources. There is no duplication of secret management in GitHub and the cloud.

How this works:

  1. Developers set up OIDC trust on their cloud roles to manage access between their deployment workflows and cloud resources.
  2. In each deployment, GitHub Actions workflow presents an autogenerated OIDC JWT token to the cloud provider
  3. Cloud provider validates the claims in the OIDC token against the cloud role definition and provides a cloud access token to connect and deploy to the Cloud only during the workflow run.
