Chapter 8 ends with starting runserver. It also says you can type Ctrl-C to stop the runserver. However, Chapter 9 doesn't say that you must stop the runserver before typing the startapp command. As a result, I had two students start typing startapp while the runserver was running, seeing the echo of the commands they were typing, but not getting any response from the commands they were typing.
I'd suggest clarifying at the start of Chapter 9 that you can only type commands when you can see the $ prompt (modified as required for Windows etc), and to hit Ctrl-C if you don't see the $.
