Lay Your Troubles Down

by Held By Trees & Martin Smith

about

When I was a teenager there was this band called Delirious that I used to go and see whenever they were touring. Their music changed my life. Those gigs were unpredictable. You never knew where the music might go.

When I was about 30 I got to know their former singer, Martin Smith. We became close friends. Recently he saw Held By Trees play and invited us to collaborate. This became a session at Real World Studios, with former Delirious guitarist, Stu Garrard also joining the merry throng. The session yielded 3 songs, and this is the first one we're releasing.

It makes so much sense to me that our first vocal collaboration is with Martin. His music has so inspired and influenced me and his friendship has been such a lifeline to me at some crunch points in my life. It's also wonderful to have Stu play with us. We tracked this song mostly live in the big room at Real World, with a few overdubs afterwards.

This song is particularly for those of us who get depressed and anxious. Sometimes we just need to let go and let someone carry us. We don't always have to suffer and struggle in silence. Part of what I hope we are doing with Held By Trees is building community, where we can feel we belong together. This song is something of an anthem for what HBT is about; solace, community and hope.

I hope it speaks to you.

David

lyrics

I can see you hiding
I can see you there
Waiting in the shadows
For someone to appear

I can feel your heartbeat
A broken heart is real
Endless waves of sorrow
But now it's time to heal

Lay down
Lay your troubles down
Lay down
Lay your troubles down

When you feel abandoned
When all hope has died
I am always with you
I've never left your side

I can see the sun light
Watch it catch your face
All your tears an ocean
An ocean full of grace

Lay down
Lay your troubles down
Lay down
Lay your troubles down

Let go
Let me carry you
Let go
Lay your troubles down
