about

Radio Alice: An Immersion into the History of Italian Free Radio

Radio Alice is a deep dive into the history of Italian free radios. Through this compilation of six Industrial/Noise music tracks, Andrea Stillacci unearths the essence of the revolutionary 1970s, a pivotal era for artistic expression.

Andrea Stillacci, an Italian native and co-founder of the advertising agency Hérézie, is a multidisciplinary creative. A passionate enthusiast of industrial music, ranging from Throbbing Gristle to Lingua Ignota, Andrea is a well-known figure in the niche world of European underground and experimental music. Radio Alice is a project Andrea Stillacci has been nurturing for several years, and for good reason: the recordings from this activist radio station, founded in Bologna in 1976, are precious archives and rare testimonies of that fertile period.

Symbolizing freedom and creativity, Radio Alice was founded by a group of friends from various autonomous and anarchist movements. They transformed an attic at Via del Pratello, 41 in Bologna into a cultural center inspired by Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."The radio was distinguished by its free and varied programming, broadcasting without restraint everything that deserved to be heard. From political speeches to poems, yoga lessons, cooking recipes, and of course, music... Rino Gaetano, Jefferson Airplane, Area, Fugs, and even Beethoven; each element found its place on the airwaves.

However, on March 12, 1977, the police abruptly interrupted the broadcasts! The police stormed the premises and arrested everyone present at the headquarters, on slanderous charges, accusing the broadcasters of orchestrating the violent clashes that occurred the day before in Bologna, resulting in the death of a student. All the equipment was destroyed during the raid.

Andrea Stillacci’s compilation pays tribute to the iconic figures of Radio Alice, its creators, and presenters, but above all, it is a sincere homage to creative freedom and alternative culture. In the six tracks of the album, we can find numerous samples of voices from that era, including sound recordings from the infamous episode of March 12, 1977.The compilation, released as a [digipack] CD, will be available on July 19, 2024. It 's a compilation that whispers between two distant eras. How many young Europeans have grown into free and creative adults under the influence of Radio Alice? In the contemporary experimental scene, the cry for freedom and resistance of the anarchist Italian youth of the late 1970s still resonates.
