In Ireland, we have a saying: 'Tosach maith leath na hoibre' Which translates to 'A good start is half the work'. This adage rings true when it comes to refining User Stories in your Portfolio Backlog. Without effective Refinement, User Stories lack sufficient detail to successfully guide development / testing, setting your deliver off on the wrong footing. As a result, this can lead to poor quality outputs being produced, which fail to deliver the intended business benefits. The below article does a great job of outlining the high-level process that should be applied when refining User Stories; ensuring only those that meet the 'Definition of Ready' criteria are taken into the Sprint Backlog. DUBLIN TECH SCENE: A SATURATED MARKET? The current state of Dublin's tech job market has become increasingly apparent after a recent conversation with an incredibly good infrastructure technologist: - 5+ years at a Financial Information and Analytics firm - 4 years at a Quant Trading firm - 5+ years at a Fund Administrator - Master's Degree with 1st Class Honors in Comp Sci In Nov 2023, he was made redundant and hasn't found a job since. He's had a handful of interviews, mainly with tech firms and startups, but they're offering a base salary 40% less than what he was previously earning. If you're wondering why, the answer is simple: because they can. If he doesn't accept the offer, then someone else will. He's been told that the advertised roles he's applying for are receiving between 400-500 CVs. It's clear that the number of people on the market far outweighs the available jobs. He now faces a dilemma: accept a role that would be a step back in his career or continue waiting for the "right opportunity". What has everyone else's experience been like in Dublin this past year? This is a significant leap from the €169 million secured in the first quarter, showing that the innovation scene in Ireland is not just thriving but accelerating at an impressive pace. Dublin continues to be the epicenter, accounting for 67% of the total funding. With enterprise software, healthcare, and fintech leading the way, it's clear that Ireland's tech ecosystem is on the rise. 💡 Cautious Optimism for Future Growth 💡 While overall investment is up, the local funding environment remains challenging, particularly for late seed and Series A rounds. Yet, there’s a silver lining: Series B and growth rounds hit record highs, with notable deals like SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3 million) and Accounts IQ (€60 million) propelling the sector forward.
