Whose Trip Is This?

I'm holding on to nothing
But this love for life
Things really haven't turned out right,
oh no
We're running at the wrong speed
Chasing our tails of time
All God's children holding back the line
Someday we're bound to wake up
And any fool could make it happen
Any fool could make it work
All they need is some compassion
Growing flowers in the earth
Who's swimming, waving and drowning
The silence grows more and more profound
Oh baby, who, whose trip is this?
I won't be blinded
The sun may be shining
But there's black clouds of smoke arising
Tell me who, whose trip is this?
Oh tell me who, whose trip is this?
Standing still amidst the madness
Gravity pulls you in
It's time to question everything you see, mmm
Who's to say we must be dreaming
Believing we all are free
Cause dreams are what we're gonna need
Or else we'll never wake up
And any fool could make it happen
Any fool could make it work
All they need is some compassion
Growing flowers in the earth
Who's swimming, waving and drowning
The silence grows more and more profound
Oh baby, who, whose trip is this?
Moonlighting, finally stopped fighting
And it's patently all for nothing
Tell me who, whose trip is this?
Oh tell me who, whose trip is this?
It's not good enough
To believe in change
When attitudes remain the same
Who, whose trip is this?
And I won't be rushed
Or dealt a hand
In somebody else's power plan
Who, whose trip is this?
Won't somebody tell me 'cause I,
I need to know now
Who, whose trip is this?
Any fool can make it happen
Can make it work
All we need is some compassion
And the will to learn
Tell me who, whose trip is this (after all)?

I'm remembering Julia
and little girls with 99 lives
she is standing in the road
sad eyes smiling
she is alone in a blue shirt
by a blue car
the sky is grey, forever grey
someone has come to visit
a father, a friend says goodbye
never to be seen again
he drives away, he just drives away.
She's laughing from the trees picking muscadines
she's crying in the pulpit waiting for a sign
she whispers a prayer as she is pushed beneath the water
promise to be a good soldier
to fight for what's hers
she's the changeling
the wrong cast
the tom boy who could run so fast
she's on her knees, on her back
the stone that couldn't be cracked
Julia is forgetting
but I am remembering
little girls with 99 lives
they are wounded but healing
quietly feeling
their loss of innocence
her fear is deep rooted
bred to the bone
an abandoned camp fire
of ash and stone
i am turning the soil
of the memories she's buried
lightening the burden of the shame she has carried
she is sinking into the earth leaving no trace
i slip into her shoes and ties the laces
i'm remembering julia
and little girls with 99 lives
we're chasing dandelions
making wishes
on four leaf clovers and falling stars
I'm learning to live
and Julia is learning to forgive.

I am holding you
he is holding me
we are guided by the light of your hands
climbing trees to the promised land
I am sleeping with him
he is dreaming of you
we are children running all the way to your door
I believe we're gonna crack this core
Starred and Dreaming
