Toronto-based producer Dan Only launches his new label, Back Breaks, hoping to unearth back-breaking beats from the depths of his production vaults. The ‘Solace in Solitude’ EP serves as an introduction to Dan's ever-evolving sonic landscape. With releases on 3024, Häws, Selections, Dirt Crew Recordings and New Kanada, and on Peach Discs and X-Kalay as Cloudsteppers, alongside fellow Toronto producer, Ciel – Dan is continuing to push his sonic boundaries, all while maintaining his distinct sound and style.

‘Solace in Solitude’ opens with a pummeling techno groove that gets straight to the point. The hard-hitting 909 is met with a rolling bassline that builds towards a wistful reveal. Soaring pads carry listeners into an elated trance in this heady techno number. Close your eyes and experience complete catharsis with this one.

‘Knock It’ continues the release’s focus on groove and harmony. An eerie drone welcomes a drunken kick pattern before bursting into a chunky breakbeat-driven groove. Dan Only’s distinct rhythm locks in amongst a flurry of angular stabs and hoovers before being contrasted by lush evolving pads. Heavy and ecstatic all at once, this hard-hitting techno hybrid has been a secret weapon of his for years.

‘Blade Goes Deep’ rounds out the release as a deep, dubbed-out proto-dubstep roller. Built around an inquisitive chord stab, this tune starts in half-time before settling into its four-on-the-floor-driven groove. The shape-shifting drums welcome a warping bassline that feels right at home in this UK-influenced cut.
