Cyclone Fengal Live News: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into Cyclone Fengal by 28 November. The depression, located 770 km south-southeast of Chennai, is expected to move north-northwestward toward the Tamil Nadu coast, potentially skirting Sri Lanka over the next two days.
IMD Alerts for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
IMD has issued a red alert for districts like Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal, warning of extreme rainfall over 20.4 cm. An orange alert is also in effect for other coastal areas, including Chennai, Villupuram, and Puducherry. Fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea until at least 28 November.
School and college closures
In response to the expected heavy rainfall, the Tamil Nadu government has declared holidays for schools and colleges in Chennai, Chengelpet, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai on 28 November. Closures may extend into the following days, depending on weather conditions. Educational institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal have also been closed.
Rain, traffic, and flight disruptions
Chennai and surrounding areas have been experiencing heavy rain, causing water-logging and traffic congestion, particularly along major roads like OMR. Flight operations at Chennai Airport were also impacted, with delays in the landing of seven flights. Despite the disruptions, state-run milk supplier Aavin assured uninterrupted service at its parlours in Chennai.
Government readies for relief efforts
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has overseen emergency preparations, urging officials to set up relief centres and evacuate vulnerable communities from low-lying areas. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and local disaster units have been deployed across the affected regions, with relief camps and medical teams on standby.
