A recent mission to the International Space Station National Laboratory delivered a payload for new biomedical research that can improve healthcare on Earth and enable commerce in low earth orbit. 🌍 One standout is a project by Clive Svendsen and his lab at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which plans to grow stem cell growth in microgravity. This could lead to new treatments for #HeartDisease and neurodegenerative disorders. 💊 At PULSE EU, we use acoustic and magnetic bioprinting to create advanced cardiac models in space. Hello again! Thank you for expressing your views via the poll last week. For a few weeks now, I have been talking about a few pharma companies that has been to space for advancing their research. So, do you know why exactly are #pharma companies flying to #space for their research?    There are several compelling reasons, but here are the top three:    Better Drug Efficacy- Crystallisation in drug development involves arranging protein molecules into an orderly pattern and the alignment of this structure significantly affects drug effectiveness. On Earth, gravity disrupts this process by causing convection, buoyancy, and precipitation, leading to uneven crystals. In microgravity, these issues are avoided, leading to better-formed crystals. For example, Keytruda has utilised microgravity to enhance crystal structure understanding, potentially reducing costs and improving patient outcomes.    Reduced Development Time - In space, cancer tumour cells can triple in size in just 10 days compared to 10 years on Earth. Microgravity puts cells under significant stress, accelerating their aging process. This rapid growth allows scientists to observe cancer progression and treatment effects much more quickly. Ritonavir, a protease inhibitor used for HIV/AIDS treatment, takes four days to crystallize on Earth but only 23 hours in space. The improved "diffusion" process in microgravity leads to faster protein crystal formation.    Unique Cell Behaviour – Studying cells in microgravity can reveal unique aspects of cellular behaviour, shedding light on disease mechanisms that may go unnoticed in traditional cell culture models. This understanding facilitates the development of more targeted and personalised therapeutics.
