about

PV-46

Primordial Void is proud to present the first-ever greatest hits compilation by New York/Chicago visionary Marshall Stacks. Compiling 14 years worth of material and spanning 90 minutes, this release serves as the perfect introduction to one of the most criminally underrated artists of the American post-noise underground. Greatest Hits ranges from explosive hard rock (“Snake Eyes,” “Point Blank”) to high-definition new age (“Sauna 2 Sauna,” “The Gates of Videoteca”), two styles which serve as the foundation of Stacks’ unique sound. His lengthy compositions, some of which feature contributions from fellow PVer Harshest Realm, often sound like ZZ Top on DMT or Soundgarden jamming it out with Terry Riley. It’s the most bizarre, perfect blend of widescreen ambient funk and heady, Motörhead-style metal riffs. There’s nothing quite like this.

Greatest Hits is out on July 13th on cassette and digital formats. Remastered from the archives by Jack Callahan (die Reihe).

“This is a compilation of songs recorded over the course of 14 years in Chicago, New York, and Twentynine Palms, California. It is basically a sonic snapshot of different locations and settings I’ve been in as well as various zones of my imagination I’ve gone into during this time. The original concept behind Marshall Stacks was imagining the sound of possessed arena rock amplifiers projecting unknown alien signals into deep space to be received by extra dimensional life forms. And basically translating the sound of that into listenable structured songs. Also part of the original inspiration was this burned out middle aged guy who worked at the liquor store by my house in Chicago. He played me a video of him playing guitar but was also playing 4 different videos of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai type guitar shredders simultaneously in the background and it just sounded completely insane. I was basically trying to make music that captured the feeling of that, old burnout Chicago hard rock dudes transmuted into this new cyber-dominated modern era we are currently living in. Also hanging out at Target as a kid in the ‘90s I was obsessed with those weird new age CD listening stations they had, and I think all these different inspirations somehow fused in my head into one psychotic vision of futuristic “fusion” music.

Huge thanks to Marcel for reaching out with the idea for this compilation and for making it happen. Also big thank you to all the twisted freak musicians who played on these tracks and helped me feel less crazy about what I was doing, and to Jack for patiently re-mastering the most fried out MP3s on earth.” — Marshall Stacks
