From a pale companion to a pale companion when the breeze blows across the water that’s when you’ll find me telling new weather or if you’d find me in the heather Ghosts ache the most In the backseat I asked a question when did the city become the country and how deep’s the water, I couldn’t fathom and what’s all this calling into the canyon and as a breeze blows across the water that’s when you’ll find me telling new weather or if you’d find me in the heather if you’d find me in the heather Ghosts ache the most I was not sleeping I was dreaming of sunlight on bodies at swim at the lido and it was then I started thinking that’s the night I climbed in through your window when we went out to find the lake I went to the water to be with my sister and all at once I saw your face which I thought to look on would be almost like death and sun

I woke all night upon the roof and every thought was a memory trap now every street seems full of you and every figure is an echo of you You’ll find me in some London pub with an echoing heart and a familiar face you’ll find me in some London pub with an echoing heart and a familiar face I wanted to know you and that’s no lie which isn’t even uneven an even lie I woke all night upon the roof and every thought was a memory trap and when I dreamed it was a dream of the sea with only the birds for company And I think I dreamt of another place with a darkened stage and a familiar face where there are no false promises or empty talk and excuses I wanted to know you and that’s no lie which isn’t even uneven an even lie

Well I called on my neighbours and I called on my friends and I asked is this even or is it even fair So I went to this evening and I took it to him and I said is this even he said Stephen you’re my friend So I went to the groundsman and I wanted to land just where I am So I called on my neighbours and I called on my friends and they called me a stranger but what’s stranger than home So I went to the groundsman and I wanted to land just where I am

The Lights 04:15
While walking home from work I passed a field of bones and I thought a room belonged to me though it’s in a city that bleeds me But the lights are coming on now… I see from time to time this place which has no time with all its hidden purposes and all the parks with no entrances But the lights are coming on now… (an ampersand)

I was never afraid of the cold moon the cold wind, the cold light I was never afraid of your customs your ritual, your manners But I couldn’t abide the winter, your winter I was back in the world of the cold moon the cold wind, the cold light and I thought it was you on the cold wind in the meadow, in the courtyard But I couldn’t abide the winter, your winter

Deceptions 04:54
Face in the rain, under rusting leaves the grassless squares and memorials racked with deceptions and intentions sickened by lust, a mind wide open I can see the last word My animal me, its strange behaviours to be rendered infantile by remote beauty which is to say it’s like a tattoo on your heart I can see the last word The foetal horse gallops in the womb

Mountain 07:52
I went up there to brood where the mountain seemed to know me with a lantern in a cave it’s where I found the hidden life Cloud, castle, lake cloud, castle, lake all the words I sent up questioning are the same as the words that answer me Every path has a hidden life existing once in the corner of my eye and every bird has no meaning to me and all I see is as far as I see Some people here are on an endless lunch break as if the smell of grass reminded them of sports day Every path has a hidden life existing once in the corner of my eye and every word has no meaning to me and all I see is as far as I see I saw the rooky wood from the window of a train and went under its boughs when I heard them call my name, they sang unfolding songs as a breeze moved through the leaves and all of this was new but the ground remembered me And I stayed like that for days ’til my bonds had worn away

about

Yesterday’s Yet to Come is a collection of songs which I recorded between 2002 and around 2010. Some of them are early versions of songs I would go on to release later, and some of them have never seen the light of day before. The earliest songs are We, Emmanuel Light, Love Ocean and Not Much Longer. I recorded these with my brother Tom back in 2002. Can’t even remember what software we used! I re-recorded We, Emmanuel Light, Love Ocean for my first album, but I think I actually prefer this version.

M. Laurelle is a song that eventually came out on Foxes in the Foyer. I foolishly overdubbed loads of acoustic guitar for that release, but I should have stuck with the original recording I’ve included here, where I recorded Spanish guitar with my laptop mic. I recorded this in the picturesque village of Romaldkirk during the 2010 World Cup.

An Uneven Lie also ended up on Foxes in the Foyer, but just the looped coda. So this is the whole verse-chorus-verse song. I’ve always really liked this song and used to play it live occasionally. The vocals were recorded on an unbelievably cheap mic. Tenner from Maplin type of job. God, I miss Maplin.

A lot of these songs remind me of a period of my life around 2005-6 when I lived in Bristol and would work in London one day a week. I used to listen to mixes on the train home while reading the His Dark Materials trilogy. Great times.

The Lights and Mountain I would go on to re-record with The Allender Band. Mountain I gave the unfeasibly pretentious title of ‘I used to go off to brood alone in the mountains’, which was a quote from The Idiot. What an idiot!

The Clever Clown was re-recorded for my first album under the name Winter. Always liked this shorter version. One of the first things I recorded on GarageBand in 2005. What even is time?

Leaves Return was a song I recorded for a 2007 compilation for Dreamboat Records (the label my friends and I set up). It was meant to be a sort of sequel to my song Leaves. By this time I’d got hold of an SM57 and an SM58. Game changing mics both.

Deceptions was an out-take from the Three-Cornered Moon album.

The Groundsman was recorded at my pal Hannah’s birthday party at the Take Five Cafe in Bristol in 2005. You can hear my friends Sam, John and Chris in the audience.

Thanks for listening.

I played and recorded almost everything; except: Dave Collingwood played drums on Deceptions, and Alex Wilkins contributed to the arrangement of The Lights.
