crazyAP It’s the perfect concept album. My staircase to heaven. I was just a young 18 year old, newly left home, when this came out. Made in SF but was perfectly suited to those dark and damp Scottish winters living in Edinburgh. At nights it’s a city of deep cellars, narrow alleys and long shadows. The crisp air smelling of hops from the breweries. I played this before I went out at night, when I came back in, and as I went to sleep. A steady diet of 41. Not a bad song but the backside is faultless. Favorite track: Here It Is.

Tomas Jacobi I bought this album on CD on a whim after reading a positive review in Q Magazine back in '94.
After initally being underwhelmed it grew on me and has been a favourite ever since.
"Forget About Jesus" and "Here It Is" are highlights, but the best thing about the album is how well it works as a whole.
I'm very happy to finally have a great sounding vinyl copy of "41" Favorite track: Forget About Jesus.

caseygoods I found a Swell cassette at my local music retailer(RIP). I took that first chance on music I didn't know. The drum sounds are epic to this day. When Swell came through my town they didn't expect anyone to even want merch, but ran to their van for a request for a t-shirt. This is pre-internet and better off for it. Music can be simple.

Don't have a thing to share I won't even comb my hair But in our room so nice This screwed up life and I sit down Is that important? I blow the goodbye test And note that all my friends Will use this time for sleep They know that talk is cheap But I know the words you say Cost more than we could pay Why leave on today? I'm sure these passing days won't try to leave (The sidewalks gone) There's a chance in hell, it seems A chance besides the fact we've seen Where she says, "Why? Why leave on today? Why leave on today?" Got a chance if all agree and she says, "Trust. Yeah, there is trust in what we say"

Song Seven 04:44
So far I'd say tonight just takes too long You've got the time to be so strange I take their side and blame the day for luck You never know how things might change I said that's all I mean, there came this time To realize what I should do And all the years the water brings me by To see the start and see that's you
4.
Kinda Stoned 04:04
Time and pills, Let's waste a year The phone is tuned, The way is clear There's some less sure Of hate and love, And some can say Where everyone Fits in Try and see, The words feel dry The morning breathes, The evening dies It's not like all Can walk on through It's more just luck That makes you choose A side (C'mon) Everybody's kinda stoned More distance Come on Everybody's kinda stoned More distance Come on Everybody's kinda stoned Everybody's kinda stoned Everybody's kinda stoned Everybody's kinda stoned Kinda Stoned

Don't Give 04:08
All my intuition fails me You want my answer? "It's time to worry" 'cause I don't give a fuck About slowly changing luck Yeah, I'd love to win you over My eyes in heaven, my balls in clover I might sleep for less time But I'd stay in this life The less I give up, the more I hurry Full confession confirms your story And I love this town And I love this town And I love this town I must sleep for less time And I love this town

I've been awake so long I hear them start Please be sure my friends I still won't try (Blessed the times, the restless times They'll drift away, like mine today) It's been on both our minds, They said you called (Every lie must be put to good use) Find a way come south, The road is smooth (The less I change the more that you'll have to) Then she would talk me down I love my problems deep, And here you are (Maybe the sunrise will come too) Dead before my eyes, And all them stars (A stupid smile almost all the way through) Then she would talk me down
7.
Where she stands Where she sits Water, life, and grace in their hands Who you gonna listen to If it's only just a smile? Thank God for sin to show the way Where she lies, Where she waits There's an act of grace in their eyes Who are you going to listen to If it's only just a smile? Thank God for sin to show the way Stay a little lonely this time, Stay a little longer this time

Here It Is 04:02
Let's say flotation suits me fine Don't need that ending till it's time And even when the choice is mine, I want your stale-bread scent Won't face that same old sleep tonight, I need to swing out till it's tight And what I'm choosing is the right, To fight like all my friends I'm never going east Until they give the missing reasons Get to play another waster, Come to turn these offers down If you say we're wrong, Then I guess we're wrong Here it is and it's waiting for the...

You're so right Tie off our saviour to be sure You're so right Whatever's said, Don't take too long And every time we rate your star It looks so dim, it seems so far "That just depends on where you are" I'm getting off but you go on It's okay We are the same, I fooled you too You're so right This is the sign of what you want And every time the rates are low I'm not the same, thought you should know Could I pretend it does not show? Yes. I'm getting tired but you go on Kind of had this fear But you were always there in time When we should go
10.
Fine days is coming Everybody's leaving 'cause they're taught to decide and every sun tries Fine days is coming Bet you don't know when the start comes Everybody's leaving Says you're strong in your head Everybody wants to share the power, You know, it's how you shoot the day

about

Swell San Francisco, California

With the release of 41 (1994), Swell capped off a trilogy that began, with their self-titled debut (1990), followed by Well (1992). All three albums share a birthplace in SF, at 41 Turk St., Tenderloin District. The music is both moody and exquisitely beautiful, w/ layered songwriting & vocals that are hauntingly persistent. Three decades later, the album's allure hasn't faded in the slightest. ... more
