Chennai Weather Highlights: IMD issues 'yellow' alert for Bengaluru and Chennai amid heavy rain forecast

S. Balachandran, Deputy Director General of the Regional Meteorological Centre, stated that the low-pressure system moving towards the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coast will bring light to moderate rainfall across most parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal for the next four days, with moderate rainfall expected at isolated locations in Chennai.

The system will also bring significant rainfall to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet on December 11 and 12. Suburban and coastal areas in Tamil Nadu are on alert for intense rain spells.

On Monday, multiple districts, including Dakshina Kannada, Davanagere, and Gadag, reported rainfall, with further showers expected in southern, coastal, and parts of northern Karnataka over the next two days. These showers are likely to remain steady as the system progresses.

The IMD has advised residents of Karnataka, particularly in the southern and coastal regions, to remain cautious during heavy rainfall. They have urged people to follow local advisories, avoid waterlogged areas, and take necessary precautions to stay safe.

The IMD forecasts Bengaluru to experience a maximum temperature of 30°C and a minimum of 18°C over the next two days. While the rainfall will offer relief from the heat, residents are advised to prepare for wet conditions and possible disruptions.

Several districts across Karnataka, particularly Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Haveri, Koppal, and Raichur, reported a sharp drop in minimum temperatures by 4-6°C. Chikkamagaluru recorded one of the lowest temperatures, at 13.4°C.

Coastal districts such as Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are expected to witness heavy rainfall on December 14.

IMD has attributed this to moisture-laden winds caused by the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which is pushing rain-bearing clouds into Karnataka.

IMD has issued a yellow alert for December 13 in districts including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chitradurga, and Ramanagara. The alert signals the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall, urging residents to stay cautious.
