The curious reason hotels always put phones in the toilet

In the eighties and nineties, telephones in hotel bathrooms symbolized luxury, providing convenience and safety. However, the rise of mobile phones made these features outdated. While some modern hotels still offer bathroom phones for practical and safety reasons, they are often seen as a vintage element today.
The curious reason hotels always put phones in the toilet
In this 21st century, if you ask someone what luxury means when you book a 5-star hotel, the immediate answer would be it has to be a prime location, with rich architecture and high-end amenities, such as gourmet dining, spas, and so on. But in the eighties and nineties having a telephone in the hotel bathroom or toilet was considered a luxury! Sounds weird?
Phones in the bath or toilet were once a symbol of high-end hotels, similar to the features like televisions near bathtubs. They were installed for both convenience and safety, allowing guests to stay connected or request services without stepping out of their bathroom. This feature was part of creating an ultra-comfortable and seamless experience for the guest.

However, as mobile phones became ubiquitous, there was no longer the need for a telephone in the bath or toilet. The concept, which once was the identity of a luxurious hotel, started to look outdated. Many hotels, especially in London, which used to have the ‘dial from the bath’ facility started removing it. Though having telephones in the toilet was out of fashion, some establishments were reluctant to address it, thinking it could diminish their luxury appeal.

Though the telephone in the toilet is no longer a luxury or necessity, some hotels continue to offer them. While a few call it reminiscent of a vintage era, others keep it for practical reasons. Telephone in the toilet today is a safety feature. Bathrooms and toilets are accident-prone spots in a hotel. The phone is usually there so that guests can call for assistance in case of emergencies or immediate needs while in the bathroom. It can also be helpful if the guest wants to avail services such as housekeeping or room service, without leaving the toilet. This way, the guest can reach the front desk or other hotel services without having to leave the bathroom. While some today find it gross or so uncool, some hotels provide the telephone in the bath to ensure that guests feel fully attended to during their stay.
