President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday nominated Herschel Walker, the former football star, as the US ambassador to the Bahamas.
Trump made this announcement on his Truth Social platform, appreciating Walker for “being a tireless advocate” for youth sports. He further praised his efforts of travelling to military bases to dampen the stigma surrounding mental health.
“Herschel has spent decades serving as an Ambassador to our Nation’s youth, our men and women in the Military, and athletes at home and abroad,” Trump said on Truth Social.
This nomination has left many wondering about his personal life and career.
Life and careerHerschel Walker is a renowned American football player who was born on March 3, 1962, in Wrightsville, Georgia. He played for the University of Georgia for three seasons and was a unanimous All-American. By the time he finished his junior year, he held 41 school records, 16 Southeastern Conference records, and 11 NCAA records.
In 1983, Walker left college to sign a groundbreaking three-year, $5 million contract with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL), a team that would later be owned by Donald Trump. He spent three seasons in the United States Football League (USFL) with the New Jersey Generals from 1983 to 1985. He then transitioned to the National Football League (NFL), where he had a 12 year career playing for the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants between 1986 and 1997as per the National Football foundation.
After the USFL folded, Walker continued his professional career in the National Football League, playing for several teams. In 1992, he expanded his athletic pursuits by becoming a member of the US bobsledding team, adding yet another unique achievement to his career.
In 1999, Walker was also awarded with a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Political careerDuring his first term, Trump appointed Walker as a co-chair of the White House’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Walker, who had previously received backing for the 2022 Senate race in Georgia, ultimately lost to Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock.
Walker, one of Donald Trump’s earliest endorsements for the 2022 elections, was a strong opponent of abortion, he was also known for making policy-related missteps and occasionally gave confusing remarks.
ControversiesHerschel got embroiled in a series of issues as a first-time candidate, during his campaign according to the Fortune. Although he campaigned as an opponent of abortion, two women accused him of encouraging and paying for them to terminate their pregnancies. However, he denied these allegations.
Additionally, his former wife and another woman accused him of domestic violence which Walker attributed to mental health issues and denied the allegations made by the other woman.
