Social media can be a freelancer's best friend—or a huge time-sink. Want to make it work for you? Your clients are likely checking out your social media before they reach out. Here’s how to turn that into an advantage. Social media can be a game-changer for freelancers. But if it’s not used strategically, it can drain your time and energy fast. Many clients check your social media to get a sense of your work, so keeping it updated is essential. Here's what works: ✅ Choose the right platforms: Focus on where your ideal clients are. For B2B services, LinkedIn is a must. Visual arts? Instagram or Pinterest may be more suitable. ✅ Share your work regularly: Keep your feed fresh with recent projects. This shows potential clients you’re active and in-demand. ✅ Engage with your audience: Social media isn’t just about broadcasting—it’s about building relationships. Respond to comments and join discussions to showcase your expertise. ✅ Share valuable content: Offer tips, insights, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your process. This positions you as an expert in your field. ✅ Use hashtags wisely: Research hashtags your clients are likely to follow. A few relevant tags will take you further than a long list. Ready to get the most out of social media? Start being intentional, and watch it become one of your best tools for connecting with clients! Looking to grow your freelance business? Your portfolio is more than a collection of past projects—it's your digital storefront. Make it unforgettable. Here's what we recommend to freelancers on Twine to make a portfolio that wins clients: Your portfolio often creates the first impression for potential clients, so it needs to be top-notch. Inexperienced freelancers often try to show everything they’ve done—a mistake that can leave clients overwhelmed and distracted from your best work. Here’s how to refine your approach, and what we now recommend to freelancers on Twine: - Showcase your best work: Quality over quantity. Choose projects that represent the work you want to do more of. Want more web design projects for tech startups? Feature only your strongest work in that area. - Tell the story behind each project: Go beyond the final product. Share the challenge, your process, and the results. Clients appreciate understanding how you solve problems. - Keep it easy to navigate: Organise your work into clear categories. If a client has to hunt to find what they want, they may click away. - Include testimonials: Let satisfied clients do the talking. Testimonials build instant trust with potential clients. - Optimise for mobile: Many clients will view your portfolio on their phones. Ensure it looks great across all devices. - Add a clear call-to-action: A simple “Let’s Work Together” button can guide clients toward reaching out. At Twine, we’ve seen freelancers boost their success rates simply by refining their portfolios. The difference? Often, it’s what stands between landing that dream project and watching it go to someone else. Is your portfolio working for you? Struggling to find your ideal clients as a freelancer? You're not alone! We caught up with Twine CEO and former freelancer, @StuartLogan, to get his top tips for finding clients. Here’s what he had to say about what works … Once you’ve figured out who your ideal clients are, the next question is: where on earth do you find them? As a freelancer, this was always a million-dollar question for me. And now, running Twine, I see it's a common challenge for many of our users. The good news is that in today's digital age, there are more avenues than ever to connect with potential clients. The bad news? It can feel overwhelming. Here’s what I’ve seen work both in my own freelance career and for successful freelancers on Twine: 🔗 LinkedIn: A goldmine for B2B connections. It’s where I found many of my clients when I was freelancing, even before dedicated freelance platforms became popular. Use it to showcase your professional portfolio and connect with decision-makers. 📸 Instagram: If you're in a visual field like design, photography, or art, Instagram is powerful. Many Twine freelancers have built impressive followings here. As a Twine Pro user, you can even promote your work on our Instagram channel. 🌐 Freelance Platforms: Of course, I must mention Twine. We’ve designed our platform to connect talented freelancers with quality clients. Other options like Upwork, Fiverr, or niche platforms specific to your field can also be effective. 💬 Industry-Specific Forums and Communities: Often overlooked, these are goldmines. Engage in spaces where potential clients seek advice and showcase your expertise to attract interest. 🤝 Local Business Networking Events: Don’t underestimate the power of face-to-face connections. Some of my best clients came from local tech meetups. 👥 Referrals from Past Clients: This was my favourite source of new business. There’s nothing like a satisfied client singing your praises to their network. Here’s my takeaway—I learned this the hard way: you don't need to be everywhere. Trying to maintain a presence on every platform will lead to burnout. Instead, choose 2-3 channels where your ideal clients spend their time and focus on those. For instance, I focused on LinkedIn, freelance platforms, and local tech events because that’s where my ideal clients were. This targeted approach was far more effective than spreading myself thin across numerous platforms. At Twine, we always advise freelancers to start with a focused strategy. Pick your channels wisely, show up consistently, and provide value. It’s all about the quality of interactions, not the quantity. Remember, finding clients is an ongoing process. It may feel slow at first, but every connection you make and every bit of value you provide will grow your freelance business. Let’s keep building! Want to attract your ideal clients consistently? Here’s the secret: Bring them to life with a detailed client persona. 🎯 Let’s dive into how to bring your ideal clients to life through a client persona. This isn’t just a theoretical exercise – it’s a powerful tool that can shape everything from your marketing efforts to your service offerings. Here’s the step-by-step approach: 1️⃣ Gather Demographic Data: Age, location, job title, industry. For example, let’s take “Tech Startup Tom” – a 30-something CEO based in a tech hub. 2️⃣ Collect Psychographic Data: Dig into your client’s goals, challenges, and values. “Tech Startup Tom” might aim for rapid growth, struggle to stand out in a crowded market, and value agility. 3️⃣ Understand Their Context: Consider their work environment, team size, and daily routines. This helps you tailor your services and communication style. 4️⃣ Collect Stories & Scenarios: Think of specific ways they’ve worked with freelancers before. Was it a good or bad experience? What made the difference? 5️⃣ Identify Pain Points & Needs: What frustrates them about previous freelancer experiences? This is where you position your services as the solution. Example: "Marketing Manager Mary" was a 35-year-old working for a growing tech startup. She handled all marketing materials but lacked an in-house design team, so she juggled multiple projects and needed a reliable freelancer who could deliver high-quality designs fast. Mary valued clear communication, punctuality, and creativity – but her biggest frustration with past freelancers had been missed deadlines and off-brand designs. By creating a persona like Marketing Manager Mary, you can tailor your pitches and services to her unique needs and preferences. Targeted personas are a game-changer for aligning your approach and increasing your success rate. Ready to create your first persona? Struggling to find your ideal clients? Here’s how to attract the right clients and build a thriving freelance business … Finding the right clients as a freelancer isn’t as straightforward as you might think. If you’re still taking on ‘anyone with a pulse and a paycheck,’ you’re probably missing out on rewarding, profitable work with clients who are truly the right fit for you. Let's talk about something it often takes freelancers way too long to figure out – understanding who your ideal clients really are. Consider this: Prince Charles and Ozzy Osbourne were both born in England in 1948. They’re both wealthy, love dogs, and vacation in the Alps. On paper, they seem like the same person…but as we know, they couldn’t be more different! It's not just about demographics like age or location. It’s about uncovering the nitty-gritty of clients’ needs, pain points, and values. It’s a common rookie freelancer mistake to think anyone with a budget is your ideal client. Too many learn the hard way that working with mismatched clients leads to frustration and projects you aren’t proud to showcase. So, here’s the process we use at Twine to help freelancers connect with the right clients: 1️⃣ Identify their challenges: What specific issues do they face that your skills can solve? When Twine’s CEO, @SuartLogan, was a freelance web developer, his ideal clients were often small business owners who needed a polished online presence without the technical know-how. 2️⃣ Understand their goals: Are they trying to increase sales, improve brand image, or streamline operations? Aligning with these goals sets you up for long-term partnerships. 3️⃣ Consider their budget: What price range can they realistically afford? Aim for clients who value your skills enough to pay fairly, avoiding those who undervalue or can’t afford your work. 4️⃣ Define their industry: Are you specialising in a certain sector? As a freelancer, @StuartLogan focused on tech startups and thrived by speaking their language and understanding their needs. 5️⃣ Determine their size: Solopreneurs, small businesses, and corporations all come with different challenges and opportunities. Deciding which you serve best helps refine your client pool. Remember, as you gain more experience, your ideal client profile may evolve. At Twine, we’ve seen freelancers start broadly and gradually niche down as they identify where their skills are most valued. Ready to find clients who truly fit?
