Right Labour here we go... Freelancers: we don't know what this means yet Labour introduced IR35. They now propose the Single Worker Status which is undefined and meant for 'anyone except the genuinely self-employed' which doesn't give much confidence in the clear definition of 'genuinely self-employed'. It also won't be a priority, rightly so based on other key issues such as cost of living and NHS. Labours small business plans mostly mention brick-and-mortar high street businesses and tackling late payments for the self-employed. They also mention opening government contracts to smaller businesses and not handing them all out to their friends (*Michelle Mone PPE*) I really hope there's an increase in contracts for freelancers as some have indicated, but with any economic improvement taking years it could continue to be tough out there. You know what's really cool to do as an employer... ... Pay people what they're worth (irrelevant of market conditions) 💡 I'm seeing a worrying trend at the moment - Companies looking for Software Developers with 6+ years experience, but not willing to pay more than £35k 😕 Look... I understand budget restraints... And as the owner of a start-up, I get that companies pockets are only so deep! But if your pockets are only deep enough to get someone with 2-3 years' experience... Stop looking for people with 6 years+ in the hopes that they'll bite your hand off because the hiring landscape isn't all that great at the moment! If you play the game like this, yeah, you MIGHT get a quick win now, but in 12 months time, when the market shifts (as it always does) your competitors will be queuing up to pay them what they're actually worth... And you'll be left back at square one!!

45% of daily emails end up in spam 🫠 This morning, I decided to check how bad my primary email deliverability really is (you know, the one connected to your website domain like [email protected]). As the report loads? SURPRISE SURPRISE! I get hit with a POOR score 👀, and 52.5% of my emails are marked as SPAM. The thing is, I’m not sending spam or cold emails. This is the email I use to talk to clients and candidates, but still, I’m flagged as SPAM. For day-to-day communication, it’s not a huge deal. But if you’re using your primary domain email for outreach to candidates and prospects, this is a serious problem. Imagine, I'm giving no reason for someone to flag me as spam, yet I'm still getting treated like one. Now think about the impact when you’re sending cold emails. Developers, don't get bullied! Don't comprise significantly!! It's not worth it. I have had a number of conversations recently where developers have stayed with companies for short periods of time for different reasons. 1 short stint at a business can be explained so long as the rest of your CV supports it. However, don't be bullied or blinded by shiny things to compromise on your original search. The grass isn't always greener and you will be looking to move before you are settled in. - Don't move for big money at the cost of enjoyment or happiness - Don't take that promotion to be a senior too early in your career - Don't accept a role that is outside your core responsibilities if you don't feel comfortable -Don't change technologies to secure employment if you don't plan too - Don't jeopardise your working style (Hybrid, remote, flexible hours) - Don't become a people manager if you want to remain an IC It's tough at the moment but staying true to who you are will shine through and help you achieve your long-term goals. Too many short roles will harm your reputation and then blaming every company for them doesn't look great. Have a good day everyone!

CTOs and IT Directors - the TOUGHEST vacancy I'm working on is a Developer position which requires being in the office 5 days a week. A big ask? Definitely. Impossible? No. I see a lot of posts from Recruiters dictating how businesses should be run, particularly when it comes to hybrid/remote. This particular vacancy is with a company where average tenure is 10 years. So their culture is clearly working, right? And if the vacancy was easy to fill, they wouldn't need to PAY a recruiter to fill it. 😬 My job is to understand the wider benefits and career options a company can offer, which might offset the perceived drawbacks of a position. One in ten highly skilled freelancers are currently out of work due to the impact of reforms to IR35 tax legislation, according to research. IPSE's survey of more than 1,300 contractors in highly skilled roles found that 21% are not currently working, with half of them attributing this to the impact of reforms to IR35 tax rules. Meanwhile, 55% of contractors said they had rejected an offer of work in the past 12 months due to it being deemed 'inside IR35' by the client. It's a bit of a redundant statement. 🗑️ Much better would be a link from your CV to your LinkedIn profile... ...especially if you have taken the time to garner some recommendations! Whilst these recommendations won't replace your references, they act as validation of what is written on your CV. 🏆 Recent recommendations lets your audience know that you are active on LinkedIn and that is a great way to reach you. ✅ Credibility! As your profile starts gathering speed with recommendations, it will also become more visible, it gets you 'up on your tiptoes' ranking-wise. It makes your profile more touchy-feely, more human! It may be a determining factor on whether you are shortlisted or not if the recruiter is on the fence. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Where can your recommendations come from in order to have this kind of positive impact? Literally 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 from within your professional network! 🌐 Recommendation from a manager? Especially if it the same person who will be a referee? Awesome! Recommendation from a boss from a couple of roles ago? 'This person doesn't like to burn bridges'! Recommendation from a colleague? 'This is a great person to work with'! Recommendation from a customer? 'This person's customer service skills are noteworthy'! Recommendation from a supplier? 'This person will manage my external stakeholders and could make a good negotiator'! Recommendation from a tutor, coach or mentor? 'This person takes continuous improvement seriously'! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Seriously...recommendations are good to have!! Just one tip, space out your requests, you don't want to have a recommendation in 2015 and then 17 more in a single week. Three weeks ago, I shared my initial thoughts on the nuances of IR35 and the challenges it presents for freelancers in the UK. After numerous discussions with clients and other freelancers I've made a fairly significant change. Initially, I signed up with an accountancy service that could serve as both an umbrella and an accountant simultaneously. However, I've since reevaluated and concluded that this dual approach isn't necessary. I'm now confident in my ability to operate outside IR35 successfully and there seems to be ample opportunities - most companies seems pretty switched on about it. Contrary to my initial concerns, IR35 isn't as daunting as it seemed. I'm more relaxed about it now (maybe just me but I really freaked out about it when i first launched). If I ever need to operate inside IR35, I'm now just happy to adjust my fees accordingly and I'll confirm the implications with my new accountant. My estimated increase of £50/day in fees would be tailored to each contract individually. Navigating the fine line between inside and outside IR35 has been a learning experience, and so I'm still happy I did all the research - makes me feel more confident with receiving and sending contracts. For any other freelancers and those considering the leap into self-employment, understanding the nuances of IR35 is still paramount... However it's just quite possibly not as hyped as I thought it might be... Freelancing is a journey of continuous learning, but with careful navigation (and mostly more experienced freelancers giving me advice) its an exciting place to be. Unpopular opinion - TECH IS STILL A CANDIDATE DRIVEN MARKET. If you think FANG making redundancies in the last 18 months and the odd start-up going under means that you "MR/MRS Funded SaaS Start-up" has the pick of Engineers, can run an 8-interview process, insist on asking "Why do you want to work for us" and undercut on offers - Best of luck. Top Talent is still employed and if you push the terrible employment market narrative, lowball offers and do not attempt to make your opportunities attractive, they will stay put.... even if it's just for job security. Interviewing has ALWAYS a 2-way process!!! #shortrant

Is AI making it more difficult for you to get a job? - I spotted a post last week of a software engineering role advertised with 200 applicants within 3 minutes. I was shortly targeted with a LinkedIn advert for a piece of software that will automatically apply for job types of your choice on your behalf – is that what we will see in 2025? - We all know ChatGPT can be very helpful when used correctly but in my opinion, CVs are starting to look the same and there are far more Z’s than S’s. - One of the tips I give people is to paste the JD into ChatGPT and ask what interview questions they are likely to be asked. I have found that this can also have a negative effect, as some people rehearse their answers and can appear robotic and scripted in interviews. - Technology has sped up the application process and made things so easy, this has distracted people from maintaining their relationships with their network, which should be one of the first places people look for help if they are out of work. When was the last time you caught up with a colleague from one of your last companies or someone you met at an event a few years ago for a coffee? "I saw a Senior Developer role advertised for £40,000 last week Josh" 🤯 This is what a candidate said to me yesterday. I have 45 calls lines up across Monday to Wednesday this week for a project I am working on for a SaaS company (Exciting!) One thing I noticed yesterday speaking to developers on how they are finding the market is that salary bandings are just so broad. I have seen it myself. 👀 There are companies that are paying what they need to to get the right talent in and doing some bl**dy good hiring 🔥 And then there are companies that I can't help but feel are still trying to take advantage of the market and paying way under the market value. What do you think?
