General election. Seasonality. Tough market. The perfect storm? I wish this month's Firefish Software recruitment industry performance update were more positive, but it's been a challenging month across perm, temp and contract. TL;DR🚀: - The total volume of placements decreased by 8%. - Temporary & contract placements decreased by 6%. - Permanent placements decreased by 10%. Further insights📖: - Jobs created decreased by 8% in June however placements made were still 2% higher than June 2023. - Total applications decreased by 14% on the month. - Only the Finance & Accountancy sector delivered positive growth on May. An absolute Ops favourite, my 3rd Key Trend for 2024 is: 3. Getting on top of your tech stack. Recruitment businesses are actually taking a step back, simplifying and streamlining their tech stacks. We're seeing more of a focus on utilising tech experts to optimise automation & AI and getting the foundations right before investing in costly products that the consultants ignore! Since 2021 there have been over 600 RecTech companies launched. There are tools aimed at pretty much every stage of the recruitment process but as any Ops person will know, a tool is only as effective as the person who wields it. Huge budgets are being spent on building the most high-tech tech stacks, but often without a true strategy to engage and optimise the processes internally. As purse strings tightened and there was more focus on ROI, companies are looking to cut or optimise a more streamlined techstack. June 2024 UK IT Salary & Contractor Rates If your company is thinking of hiring, do it now. As demand rises, so too with the rates of pay and the difficulty levels of attracting and securing the right talent. If, however, your company is slowing down - beware! If your IT staff start to feel insecure, talent competitors and recruiters will find it very easy to persuade your staff to interview elsewhere. Despite the stress and negativity that may exist, take the time to focus on reassuring your team and, where appropriate, reward their loyalty. Demand for Intermediate-level Software Developers is decreasing, resulting in salary levels on offer declining. For the time being it appears that the days of intermediate developers securing 15% - 20% pay increases when moving jobs are over.   Current advertised salaries for software developers in the UK (3 months to June 2024) are down to 2019 levels.   Is this trend mirrored elsewhere in the world?
