Every day, up to 30,000 patients across the UK are well enough to be discharged from hospital but are held up by discharge delays. For older adults, the longer they stay in hospital, the higher the risk of infection and delayed recovery, with every extra day in hospital adding an estimated week to their recovery time. The strain on the NHS is enormous, costing an estimated £4.3 billion annually.
