Do you get confused by the variety of terminology when thinking about #EarlyYears Physical Development? Check out our helpful glossary of terms... We welcomed Ofsted “Best Start in Life 2” document: it is very encouraging to see the 3 Prime Areas of Learning given equal status across the EY curriculum. However, it is essential they are seen to be working together, particularly across #policy & #practice. Terms associated with movement are used interchangeably within the document, despite each having their own specific definition and meaning. This reduces clarity and coherence, when both are vital to presenting the key recommendations in relation to the prime areas, and physical development particularly. So lets work together to eliminate confusion when talking about early years Physical Development...   👉Physical Activity Body movement of varying intensities that requires more energy than resting, often gained through play 👉 Physical Development The growth of the body and its parts, including muscle and motor development 👉 Physical Literacy Our relationship with movement and physical activity throughout life 👉 Fundamental Movement Skills Specific core skills that involve different body parts such as feet, legs, trunk, head, arms, and hands that form the basis for more complex abilities 👉 Gross Motor Skills Control of larger muscles for actions like jumping, biking, skiing, and dancing 👉 Fine Motor Skills The ability to involve small muscles working with the brain and nervous system to control movements in areas such as the hands, fingers, lips, tongue, and eyes Control of small muscles, used for hand, finger, lip, tongue, and eye movements 👉 Motor Control The process of initiating, directing, and grading purposeful voluntary movement   This is the 1st highlight of our response to part 2 of “Best Start in Life”...follow us for more insight focusing on the area of #PhysicalDevelopment, with further suggestions on relevant #research & practical guidance for practitioners #Movement #Play #EYFS #EarlyChildhood #EYtalking #EYMatters
