Sudden changes in construction are inevitable. Nothing should compromise quality. Document all changes, communicate them to all stakeholders, refer to all contractual obligations regarding the changes, and proceed with developing the best solutions that will not delay your schedule. Maintaining quality is of utmost importance, so no corners should be cut. Minimizing the impact to the schedule will save time and money. Think outside the box if you have to.

Changes could happen anytime time during project lifecycle. The earlier the changes happen the better for project management. If it happens during the construction then the impact will likely increase in both cost and schedule but what is important is not to compromise safety and quality. So the normal actions is to engage stakeholders and update on the changes and root causes and bring to the table options to recover for approvals.

Sudden Design Changes/Variations - Make sure it’s all documented with the consent and approval of the Client. - Check design changes impact with all the different discipline that may be affected. Raise RFI if there are some grey areas for clarifications and suggest effective solutions if there are some issues. - Inform trade affected to stop work if needed - Submit variation for approval. (Seek urgent approval if needed) - above all “COORDINATION” is the key to ensure quality is being implemented accordingly throughout the completion of the project.

When sudden design changes occur, you could use software tools like Contractor Foreman to maintain quality control and streamline updates. Start by revising plans and notifying the team of new specifications through the platform’s document management and RFI features, so everyone works from the latest information. Tracking revisions and logging updates in real-time allows for seamless adaptation to changes. Additionally, you can use tools for daily logs, inspections, and checklists to confirm each stage of work aligns with the revised design, ensuring quality standards are upheld even with unexpected adjustments.

Managing sudden design changes in construction requires a proactive approach to maintain quality control. Immediate documentation and clear communication of changes to all team members are essential. Updating the quality control (QC) plan to reflect new standards or risks ensures alignment across the project. Conducting an impact analysis helps assess effects on materials, timelines, and safety. Increasing site inspections with revised checklists ensures adherence to quality standards. Briefing workers on new requirements and performing real-time quality audits facilitate early issue detection. Utilizing digital tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM) streamlines tracking and ensures quality aligns with updated designs.
-
To maintain quality control during sudden design changes in construction, first review the new plans to ensure compliance with codes and project goals. Involve designers, engineers, and the construction team early to assess feasibility and identify potential issues. Update quality control processes, including inspection and testing plans, to reflect changes. Communicate the updates clearly to the team and provide training if needed. Monitor progress with regular site inspections and document deviations. Finally, adjust the schedule and budget to account for the changes, prioritizing quality over speed to ensure the final result meets standards. Utilizing collaboration software tools such as dRofus+BIM in initial stage of project is plus.
-
A robust Quality Control program will set out the quality assurance required for all aspects of the project. Added scope does not mean you forego the Quality Program and not perform quality assurance. This speaks to the heart of the Construction teams mindset. If the mindset is correct then no construction activities are completed without an ITP referencing the required completed IQR's. A turnover book is not complete without all completed and signed ITP's and IQR's. A certificate of completion cannot be issued without a completed and signed handover book. This needs to be referenced as a requirement in the contract schedules.
