To connect with clients from different cultures, I focus on cultural awareness, active listening, and adaptability in communication. I tailor my approach based on the client’s values, communication style, and trust-building preferences. By emphasizing shared goals, maintaining patience and flexibility, and encouraging open feedback, I work to build strong, respectful relationships. Additionally, incorporating empathy and culturally sensitive conflict resolution can strengthen these connections even further.

I learn about my client's cultures and listen carefully to their needs. I ask questions to understand their views better and adjust my approach to make them comfortable. Showing respect and being open helps build trust and strong, positive relationships.

I read about their culture and value system before meeting. I am also a music therapist and I thoughtfully select comforting background music when I speak to the clients. It is chosen from their culture and I ask them if they like that musician, or the musical instrument or if they have seen the movie from where I might have chosen that piece. It not only acts as an ice breaker but also communicates my willingness to understand them. The client finds it soothing. Keeping judgements aside helps. Accepting them the way they are without judging their outfit, ornaments, accessories and mannerisms is essential. Keeping phone on silent mode to give undivided attention and a positive body language also helps.

It is not always possible to learn the culture of all the people you interact with, but I do agree being a good listener, observant and most importantly being emotionally intelligent plays a big role in how one handles various situations. Most importantly never assume anything and be open to learning.

Focus on the values as opposed to culture might be the way. Values such as attentiveness, attention to detail on the requests coming our way, practice of keeping notes, robust follow up, excellent reasoning, readiness to walk the extra mile, genuine honesty etc could transcend divides. Own culture of integrity would be welcome in any cultural mix.
