"The ecological richness of New Caledonia is one of the lasting mysteries of natural history. High concentrations of nickel are usually toxic to plants, but here evolution took an unusual path. In the course of tens of millions of years, the island’s infertile soils came to nurture a flora unlike any other in the world." https://lnkd.in/geG5tG7a

✨THE highlight of Slush Day 1: Maria Raga sharing the incredible insider story of Etsy’s $1.6bn 2021 acquisition of Depop. The deal returned the fund for Creandum and generated a staggering 20+x return ✨ In her conversation with Fredrik Cassel , Maria revealed: - A key piece of advice she got at the start of the process: Don’t show your cards to the Board until the right moment. - How to get leverage with 1 buyer? Not needing or necessarily wanting to sell gave optionality as did gaming out an IPO scenario. - She believed so strongly that it was the right deal for Depop, she considered resigning if the Board voted towards the IPO path. They didn’t. - Dramatically, one hour before the deal was going to be announced, one investor refused to sign. 💡For founders/CEOs contemplating acquisition, key learnings Maria and Fred discussed are: - Companies should be bought, not sold. Don’t focus on exit; focus on building a great business and then exit options will come. - A strong Board is worth its weight in gold. - Don’t get cheap with the lawyers. Great advisors are critical. - Have patience. It’s a roller coaster process.

This is a good reminder: China plans to use its LEO broadband constellations to extend its influence and strategic relationships in the Global South. SpaceX’s Starlink (and hopefully soon Amazon’s Project Kuiper) gives the U.S. the chance to offer a rival vision to PRC-operated LEO connectivity. Time for U.S. leadership to take advantage of U.S. commercial innovation and develop policies that help spread U.S. digital values and services - driving economic growth and strengthening international partnerships. Space Heritage 🌟🪐: On this day three years ago, SpOC Guardians played a role in the world's first planetary defense test mission. NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission launched on Nov. 23, 2021, aimed to verify if a kinetic impact could redirect an asteroid's path. Our Guardians supported the mission by using space surveillance assets to track and monitor orbital debris, ensuring flight safety and providing route clearance to the asteroid. On Sept. 26, 2022, the DART spacecraft made a direct hit on the target asteroid—which was traveling roughly 15,000 mph nearly 6.7 million miles from Earth—and shortened its orbit by an astonishing 32 minutes! ☄️ This historic mission confirmed that NASA can successfully navigate a spacecraft to intentionally collide with an asteroid and kinetically deflect its orbital trajectory. This is a crucial step in protecting our planet from potential asteroid threats! **Information provided by SpOC History Office** United States Space Force #USSpaceForce #SemperSupra #BuildOnAndBuildOut #USSF5

Too many "solutions" for reducing industrial carbon dioxide emissions are too costly to be viable. That's why it was a treat to chat with Ryan Gilliam at Fortera and hear how their system for reclaiming CO2 from the cement-making process will help clean up concrete-making... while reducing production costs. Read all about it in my new article for Forbes. Thanks to Albert Rettenmaier of E3 Consulting for his expert insights!
