The shift from globalization to planetarity challenges us to rethink our place in Earth's ecosystem. 🌍 Nathan Gardels explores planetary realism and how "Gaiapolitik" could replace outdated nation-state paradigms. At the 2024 #PlanetarySummit, he emphasized aligning technology, cooperation, and ecological awareness to tackle global challenges like climate change. Exploring new ideas across tech, governance, philosophy and culture in an era of Great Transformations.
About us
The Berggruen Institute’s mission is to develop foundational ideas and, through them, shape political, economic and social institutions for the 21st century. In the age of technology and globalization—as our traditions are challenged, new social orders are emerging and political institutions falter—critical analysis of our most fundamental beliefs and the systems founded on them is required. Great Transformations are reshaping human life, social organization, and the world. These are epochal changes, not incremental, and are taking place now, in our lives and our children’s. The Berggruen Institute seeks to deepen understanding of these great transformations, the ethical responses they demand, the social decisions they make possible, and how they are seen from different civilizational perspectives: Beyond Human: Science and technology, including especially artificial intelligence and bioengineering that can potentially redesign life itself. Innovating Culture: Cultural change, including the influence of both globalization and creativity in science, art, and social life – and attempts to resist each. Resilient Governance: The pursuit of more effective governance, including politics and social institutions. Geo-Politics and the New Economy: The global intersection of geopolitics and economics, including possible transition beyond capitalism.

The crises of the past century—from climate change to pandemics—demand a new paradigm. In his opening plenary for last weeks Berggruen Planetary Summit in Venice, Nils Gilman argued for a radical rethink of governance rooted in a planetary consciousness. 🌍 At the 2024 Planetary Summit in Venice, he explores how we can move beyond the limitations of national sovereignty to embrace a cooperative, holistic approach. NEW ARTICLE: https://lnkd.in/eucQ4QqF The process of producing Artificial Intelligence might also artificialize our entire planet. Many have argued this is already underway. My latest, for Berggruen Institute's Noema Magazine unearthing the roots of modern ideas like 'the technosphere' & 'the Anthropocene'— tracing it back to locust swarms, termite mounds, and crabs...

"Antibiotics are one of the true miracles of modernity. The problem is, they've been overused to such an extent." Jonathan Blake, co-author of Children of a Modest Star with Nils Gilman, explains the urgency of protecting antibiotics through global cooperation. The book further discusses how antibiotic overuse has led to rising resistance, and without global action, we may face a future where common infections are once again deadly. The Berggruen Institute Europe is delighted to announce the Geophilosophy of Europe, a program featuring thinkers of different ages, cultures and disciplines. The program, inaugurated in May with Giorgio Agamben, investigates Europe’s philosophical identity and its unique potential contribution to the world as the globe metamorphosizes into a fractured planet. Casa dei Tre Oci will be the venue for an annual research and production work on the Idea of Europe, and each closed-door seminar will be followed by an event open to the public!

🟣2021 #BerggruenPrize Laureate Peter Singer examined why the U.S. lags so far behind Europe in animal welfare standards–from battery cages to heating birds to death–arguing in TIME that America’s political system, despite public opinion, systematically deprioritizes Americans’ desired reforms. https://lnkd.in/d2JQNPAw #IdeasMatter
